Where is the "Forge for Dummies" guidebook?

Postby upfromtheashes » 06 Sep 2013, 03:06

I can't even figure out how to get started in Quest mode because I can't figure out how to navigate the interface. All of the help files are about playing Magic. I don't need help playing Magic, I need help using this app.
For example, how do I get back to the "main screen" (ie the starting screen or whatever) from the deck editor? Once I go into the deck editor I can't see any way to get back short of closing/reopening Forge.
I go into the Quest deck editor, create a deck, save it...and then after exiting the app and going back to the Quest menu...there are no decks listed.
I can't find any "Forge 101" documentation anywhere. I can find more advanced documentation on how to do all kinds of cool stuff in Forge, but I need the very basics of navigating the app explained to me. Thanks in advance.

clicking the X to close the deck editor should bring the the Forge main screen back. Is it closing everything out when you do that?

If you come from a Windows background then you would usually expect X in the top right to quit the current application. In Forge it is used to close the active screen unless it is the home screen in which case it will in fact close Forge. A bit unusual but it is consistent.

I agree Forge could probably do with a basic guide/tutorial - however I am a dev and am incapable of writing user documentation - so, maybe while you are learning to use Forge...?

Cheers,
Steve.

ahHAAAA...
Since I have obviously been outed as a Windows-only aficionado, you're exactly right that I would not have thought about clicking the X in order to go back a screen! lol I'll give this a shot tonight and see how my mileage improves. Thanks much.

this is the first program in windows i ever used, where you can only go backwards through clicking the X in the window. in fact, i never used a program before, where you can go to the main menu in this way. how should windows user know this? :D

the program is very nice, but i had many problems with the UI, because i didnt knew how to go to the main menu. i wasnt able to do quests. i thought you always had to restart forge (Menubar -> Forge -> Restart) to go back. Bacause there was only Exit and Restart in the menu.

i wouldnt wonder if many windows users stopt using forge after a few games, because they couldnt find out how to go back to the main menu and therefor couldnt use the UI properly. Couldnt you include a button in the Menubar -> Forge -> "Mainmenu"? A button "every" other program you can use in windows has? :)

I'm planning to add navigation tabs to the new skinned titlebar in the near future, so you'll have a tab for the Home screen, the Deck Editor, and the current game (if any). I'll then make the X button actually close Forge like everyone expects (though I'll prompt for confirmation from all screens besides the Home screen). I'll then put a separate X button inside the tab for closable screens (the game screen only at this moment) that can be used to close the tab and jump back to the previous screen.

Hopefully this will make navigating Forge much more obvious for new users and easier for existing users (once they adjust to not clicking the X button in the upper right to go back).

I'm also hoping this will allow having multiple games running at the same time, though I'll have to see if that becomes too much of a resource hog.

Going to back to the main menu was also a big mistery for me.
Searched also for some hotkeys, but couldn't find anything.

And at this moment I am figuring out how to pay life as mana cost, casting Bond of Agony.
Tried click on my Avatar, cause there is my life total. Tried UP and DOWN arrow, PageUP, PageDOWN.

How to pay X Life for Bond of Agony ? And where could I find this information. I tried several search keywords, but couldn't find anything.

By the way, I am using version 1.4.7 on Win7. Playing in Quest Mode.
