I am currently running a Ravnica-only new quest (i mean only the 2 Ravnica blocks and their expansions sets in the Ravnica world) and so far i had been properly beaten by the AI a lot : 9 - 20

It's not that i have poor cards and can't make a decent decks, because i have now a red-white that i think at that point is very decent :

fiz-yetanotherredwhitedeckagain | Open
1 Angel of Serenity|RTR
1 Ash Zealot|RTR
1 Boros Elite|GTC
1 Boros Garrison|RAV
1 Boros Guildgate|DGM
3 Faith's Fetters|RAV
2 Fencer's Magemark|GPT
1 Firemane Avenger|GTC
1 Foundry Street Denizen|GTC
1 Guardian's Magemark|GPT
1 Madcap Skills|GTC
1 Martial Glory|GTC
3 Mountain|RTR|2
4 Mountain|RTR|4
4 Mountain|RTR|5
1 Order of the Stars|GPT
1 Ordruun Veteran|GTC
3 Plains|RTR|3
8 Plains|RTR|4
2 Pursuit of Flight|RTR
1 Rally the Righteous|RAV
1 Skyknight Legionnaire|GTC
2 Skyknight Legionnaire|RAV
1 Sunhome Guildmage|GTC
2 Taste for Mayhem|DIS
2 Thundersong Trumpeter|RAV
2 Trained Caracal|RTR
3 Viashino Firstblade|DGM
2 Wild Cantor|GPT
3 Wojek Halberdiers|GTC

But i got an impressive amount of situations in which i had either not enough mana coming (getting too few lands and only picking creatures or spells) or too much (nearly picking only lands each turns), while the AI has been much more lucky.
Despite i have a standard 24 lands in that 60 cards deck.

I'm starting to win a bit (got 2 wins in row in my last duels), but still Ravnica has been kicking the few previous decks i had built around.
I guess having decided to play without a pet makes it noticably harder, as it means less early attackers on my side and then the AI attacking earlier (because the pet isn't there to block).

I hope luck will come back :D , hopefully once i'll be able to afford the Mulligan upgrade at the bazaar it should help.

Started an M15 draft using a pre-release event style pool (created a sealed deck with 6 boosters). Started out rough, but I finally won enough to enter a tournament, and man, what a draft that was. Wiped the floor with the AI and didn't lose once. M15 is an extremely fun draft!

M15 Quest Draft | Open
[Main]
1 Amphin Pathmage|M15
1 Black Cat|M15
1 Coral Barrier|M15
1 Crippling Blight|M15
2 Encrust|M15
1 Eternal Thirst|M15
1 Flesh to Dust|M15
1 Frost Lynx|M15
1 Hot Soup|M15
1 Indulgent Tormentor|M15
1 Invisibility|M15
2 Island|M15|3
6 Island|M15|4
1 Jace, the Living Guildpact+|M15
1 Kapsho Kitefins|M15
1 Mercurial Pretender|M15
1 Military Intelligence|M15
1 Necrobite|M15
1 Nightmare|M15
1 Polymorphist's Jest|M15
1 Soul of New Phyrexia|M15
4 Swamp|M15|1
4 Swamp|M15|4
1 Turn to Frog|M15
1 Typhoid Rats|M15
1 Welkin Tern|M15
1 Zof Shade|M15
[Sideboard]

That Soul of New Phyrexia won me nearly every game. Indestructible everything is so good. The Jace allowed me to sift through my cards to find the lands I needed to drop it and I had plenty of evasion to block everything my opponents could throw at me. If they had too many creatures out, Hot Soup and Amphin Pathmage took care of that nicely.

Since the forums don't appear to have M15 cards yet:
Soul of New Phyrexia: Cast for 6, activate for 5 mana to give all your permanents indestructible for a turn
Jace: +1 - Look at the top 2 cards of your library, put one into the graveyard, -8 - Both players shuffle hand + graveyard into their libraries, you draw 7 cards.
Amphin Pathmage: 2U: Target creature can't be blocked this turn.
Hot Soup: Cost 1, Equip 3, Equipped creature can't be blocked; if it takes damage, destroy it.

New version, new quest, i have decided to give a try to the new M15 set by making a M15-only one (cards, spellshop, etc..) though as there's no M15 world, i'm currently trying Main World.

My first deck was a green and red one, as it was where i had my best card from my starting stockpile, my victory/loss reached 3 - 3

M15 is not really balanced with what Main World can have (the "easy" Harry Potter AI milling me completely in few turns, last turn of the battle he put 36 cards of my library into my graveyard in a single turn ! ), but i was surprised to get some really nice luck in my picking order, though it was very dependant if the AI was in luck or not too (that damn Harry Potter).

Shivan Dragon , oh the memories of microprose' MTG game in shandalar, still a strong card :D

It was then that in the spellshop i found Garruk, Apex Predator , as i had decided to not buy a pet (and had not yet spend anything on the bazaar) i could actually afford it at that point of the game.

And as it's my only planewalker (and a rather powerful one though very expensive in mana) so i took it and decided to build a Black Green deck , as i had gained some acceptable green and black cards in the post-duels.

So far i am now at 6 - 3 after a 3 win streak with my black green deck, improved it a bit

After getting 3 defeats on a streak with the same deck ( wow when luck is not there, it is really not there :D ) , i finally won, 7 - 6 for now.
And the rewards were pretty great, a new planewalker
Image
And in the booster there were some nice cards too.

My only problem is that Ajani Steadfast is completely white mana, so if i would put it in my black and green, it would mean expanding my deck to tri-color, i'm not confident enough in my current deck power to switch to that
As despite the deck is currently good with some cards having nice and usefull combo abilities, i noticed my victories are all taking long turns, didn't got a single "less than 15" turns one with it, and that's only "easy" (though "easy" on main world is "medium" in most other ones)

I'll very likely make a white deck then, will make a change from the black green i've been running since some time.

Still having focused the gold earned on cards, i didn't had enough to buy any life boost item, meaning i'm still at 15 lives while the AI is of course at 20, i'll have to focus on getting to 20 quick

Looks like that white deck i've been able to build is very good, a 3 victory streak with it, several "less than 15 turns" too , but bad luck for the AI certainly played a role :)

3 Sungrace Pegasus|M15
2 Warden of the Beyond|M15

Serra Angel ! looks like M15 talks to my microprose mtg nostalgia :)

And lucky me, in the booster rewarding, another planewalker
Image

Another nice new is that Nissa, Worldwaker is green mana, so i could have her fit with my green/black deck without a problem to benefit from having Garruk, Apex Predator .
Or i could try a white/green later to get a Nissa, Worldwaker playing with Ajani Steadfast as Ajani's loyalty gift to other planeswalker in one of his ability could be very usefull in a multi-planeswalker deck, as i think i'll focus a bit more on that white deck to see if it's good or if i was just lucky.

So far, i like M15, though i have no idea if it's balanced, i'll have to try some constructed duels against my own decks and with the intro ones

edit :
Gave a last try for a while with my black/green deck and the reward were great, another planeswalker, Jace, the Living Guildpact and a nice battlefield clearing card, Mass Calcify to go with my white deck
I guess it's an advantage of playing with only 1 set , planeswalker come more often than when playing with only 1 block or multiple ones

Re: The Ultimate Quest Mode Thread

In my m15 quest after getting Liliana Vess from a M15 booster in the spellshop, i decided to rework a bit my M15 greenblack deck and get here with Nissa, Worldwaker and Garruk, Apex Predator on the same deck :

Fizanko-BlackGreenBigM15 | Open
1 Caustic Tar|M15
2 Centaur Courser|M15
3 Child of Night|M15
3 Elvish Mystic|M15
2 Eternal Thirst|M15
2 Feast on the Fallen|M15
3 Forest|M15|1
4 Forest|M15|2
4 Forest|M15|3
1 Garruk, Apex Predator|M15
1 Genesis Hydra|M15
1 Hornet Queen|M15
1 Hunt the Weak|M15
1 In Garruk's Wake|M15
1 Liliana Vess|M15
2 Nissa's Expedition|M15
1 Nissa, Worldwaker|M15
1 Overwhelm|M15
2 Paragon of Open Graves|M15
2 Radiant Fountain|M15
1 Soul of Zendikar|M15
3 Swamp|M15|1
4 Swamp|M15|2
4 Swamp|M15|3
4 Typhoid Rats|M15
1 Venom Sliver|M15
1 Verdant Haven|M15
2 Wall of Limbs|M15
1 Wall of Mulch|M15
1 Yisan, the Wanderer Bard|M15

And for the 1st time i managed to get 3 planeswalkers at once on my side of the battlefield, luck was there :)
Image

I delayed a bit the win to gather more loyalties on my planeswalker and use their best abilities (usually it's rare i get to use one, usually a game is finished before they get enough loyalties) , here's what i got before deciding to launch the final assault, poor "Sherlock Holmes" :

Image

As funny as it seems, luck is still a heavy factor in duels, and next round Sherlock Holmes annihilated me easily as i couldn't get more than 2 lands for the duration of the whole round.

Not really a Quest, but I won my first 7-0 draft with M15 with this deck:

| Open
[Main]
1 Borderland Marauder|M15
1 Bronze Sable|M15
1 Crippling Blight|M15
1 Evolving Wilds|M15
1 Forge Devil|M15
1 Heat Ray|M15
1 Inferno Fist|M15
1 Lightning Strike|M15
2 Mind Rot|M15
1 Mountain+|M15|1
7 Mountain|M15
2 Ornithopter|M15
1 Sacred Armory|M15
2 Scrapyard Mongrel|M15
2 Seismic Strike|M15
3 Shadowcloak Vampire|M15
2 Soul of Shandalar|M15
8 Swamp|M15
1 Typhoid Rats|M15
1 Wall of Fire|M15
[Sideboard]
1 Avacyn, Guardian Angel|M15
1 Back to Nature|M15
1 Brood Keeper|M15
1 Carnivorous Moss-Beast|M15
1 Charging Rhino|M15
1 Circle of Flame|M15
1 Clear a Path|M15
1 Festergloom|M15
2 Garruk's Packleader|M15
1 Miner's Bane|M15
1 Negate|M15
1 Plummet|M15
1 Serra Angel|M15
1 Tireless Missionaries|M15
1 Unmake the Graves|M15
1 Walking Corpse|M15

Notes on how this deck performed:
-Shadowcloak Vampires were all-stars, accounting for most of the beats given.
-Scrapyard Mongrels performed nicely. They're the reason the Ornithopters were drafted.
-Yes, TWO Souls of Shandalar. I couldn't believe my luck. Those mostly stayed in my hand, but were the ones I called on to break a stalemate.
-Avacyn, Guardian Angel. Shameless hate draft.
-Lots of decent removal was available. There seemed to be a lot of competition in red from the AIs but strangely enough there was still enough good material for me.

New quest, starting with one set (Unlimited) and unlocking a new set every 5 wins. Game one of my current match, against Green Arrow, my opening hand was Swamp, Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual and a Juggernaut. I just love dropping a first turn Juggernaut. <evil grin>

Wow, it's a deck you would need a truck to transport all the cards.

Obi-Wan: "That's no moon. It's a space station."
Han Solo: "It's too big to be a space station."
Luke: "It's Timmermac's giant Forge deck !"

@Timmermac, do you have other giant decks like this one ?

I was thinking in the hand of the AI it could nearly serve as a "random deck" while playing constructed duels against it, as no play of such AI would really be the same

I have a few that I've made that actually have themes. They're in the decks forum. You'll need a couple of other attached files for one of them. The files are for a card that I made to give white a lord-type creature.

I really like this mode. It's pretty much all I've ever wanted in a Magic program, but I think I might be doing something wrong. This probably doesn't sound very good for me, but I haven't been able to win a match against any of the Easy AIs yet in quest mode, no matter what kind of deck I try to build.

Whenever you begin a quest, you get a relatively randomized set of cards from which you can build a deck, right? However, most of the time, you'll only get one of each kind of card. Thing is, all of the AI opponents already have thematically coherent decks, and my cobbled together starting decks never seem to be able to pull anything out.

I'm pretty much a beginner when it comes to Magic, and it feels a little frustrating that all of the opponents start with decks that have really good options available to them. Is there anything I can do? Do I just need to keep powering through until I can win?

A few things to try-

Something that might help is taking a look at your opponents decks before the match. They are all listed under the Sanctioned Formats, Constructed. Pick "Quest Opponent Decks" in the drop down. Use it to get a better idea of how their deck works and adjust your deck if you need to.

Another thing you can try - go into the Quest Preferences and adjust your settings to give you a bit of a boost in the beginning. Give yourself the maximum amount of gold per reward and adjust the shop preferences to allow more cards overall. With the increased amount of gold and better card selection, you can start buying the cards you need to fill out your deck. Also, you can try adjusting the rarity ratio of boosters, it's a nice way to earn some really powerful cards early and give your collection a boost.

On last thing (and this might the best for a beginner Magic player like yourself) - Start a new quest with a starting pool of "Event or Starter Deck". This will give you a solid themed deck to start with that wont feel so cobbled together. All of the preconstructed decks can be viewed under Sanctioned Formats, Constructed. Pick "Precontructed Decks" in the drop down.

Quest mode opponents can be brutal sometimes, especially when your deck is just a bad match up against theirs. Just keep going at it and, in the end, try to have fun!

If you're playing in "Main World" , the game can be very hard, because all the MTG cards are used there, meaning all the silly badly thought unbalanced cards are in play, making overpowered and broken decks nearly a standard.

So even on Easy some AI have decks that can destroy you in less than 10 turns, and as in the beginning you do not have good and enough cards to build similarly broken decks, unless you're very lucky in the order in which the AI "easy" will pick its cards from library, you're going to get a lot of losses.

Fortunately, even from losing you get a booster pack and sometime rare cards, so even if you lose, you'll be able to get more cards and hopefully with some luck some good or very good ones, allowing your decks to become more powerful to face the ones from the AI.

Additionally, if you stick with the "Main World", know that after you move to "Medium" AI or "Hard", they will most use broken decks with "power nine" cards and other insane broken cards.
So i highly recommend you take advantage of getting a pet in the bazaar, i think the hell hound is simply the best, as once upgraded it can get haste and 2/1 , meaning you can attack 2 times (if lucky as the AI broken decks may have already got a few P9 and so enough mana to play fast several creatures) before the opponent can even field anything.

But what i found i enjoyed the most is moving to an other world like Ravnica, that i found it having the most balanced decks in the AI hands instead of utterly overpowered/broken ones like in Main World.

But in the same time, if you move to a world like Ravnica, i recommend you to setup the quest so you can only get Ravnica cards yourself, as Ravnica is only balanced if you use cards from the 2 blocks and expansions (Ravnica: City of Guilds, Guildpact, Dissension, Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze)

If you use all the cards as if you were in Main World, you're going to get overpowered decks like in Main World and would get no real challenge from Ravnica, missing all the fun from it.
