Forge Beta: 1-23-2015 ver 1.5.33

14514 cards in total.

Release Notes

- Zoom to a XLHQ card picture -

Forge now supports showing XLHQ (extra large high quality) card pictures when zooming in on a card if these pictures are available. Forge will look for XLHQ card art in the "XLHQ" subfolder of the "pics/cards" folder in Forge cache. XLHQ pictures should have the ".xlhq.jpg" extension instead of the ".full.jpg" one (CCGHQ XLHQ releases comply with this naming scheme). For example, while the regular 10th edition Blaze will be looked up as "pics/cards/10E/Blaze.full.jpg", the XLHQ version will be looked up as "pics/cards/XLHQ/10E/Blaze.xlhq.jpg". If the XLHQ picture is not available Forge will show you the regular card picture in the zoomed view, as usual. Please note that XLHQ versions of cards are *only* showed in the zoom view, regular card pictures are still used (LQ/HQ, depending on what you're using) on the battlefield and elsewhere in the game because XLHQ art is significantly more taxing in memory consumption even when compared to standard high quality (HQ) releases (and in addition to that, XLHQ card borders are not cropped the way Forge expects them in order to show them properly on the battlefield anyway). XLHQ tokens are also supported, but the naming scheme for them is a little different - they are looked up in "pics/tokens/XLHQ" and have their ordinary names. For example, the 1/1 red Goblin token from the Magic 2015 set is normally looked up at "pics/tokens/r_1_1_goblin_m15.jpg", while its XLHQ version is looked up at "pics/tokens/XLHQ/r_1_1_goblin_m15.jpg".

- Fate Reforged cards -
Forge now includes many of the new CFate Reforged cards. It may take a few days/weeks before these new card pictures become available for downloading via the "Download LQ Card Pictures" button. The LQ set pictures tend to take a few more weeks/months to process before they become available for downloading via the "Download LQ Set Pictures" button. Please be patient. The Forge devs are not involved in maintaining the servers that house these pictures.

Known Issues

Issues list | Open
- Commander 2014 cards -
Forge now includes many of the new Commander 2014 cards. It may take a few days/weeks before these new card pictures become available for downloading via the "Download LQ Card Pictures" button. The LQ set pictures tend to take a few more weeks/months to process before they become available for downloading via the "Download LQ Set Pictures" button. Please be patient. - Continued Work on Conspiracy -
Conspiracy is one of the strangest sets that have been released in some time. Currently, we have a few of the "Draft matters" cards scripted, although you'll find that they won't quite be available to you (unless you add them manually into a draft deck). Hopefully we'll get the appropriate functionality in so we can start including them in boosters and allowing you to add Conspiracy type cards straight to your deck the way you do every other variant card. We'll make sure to point out when all of these kinks have worked themselves out.

- The Mac OS application version -
We can now package Forge as a Mac OS application. You can double click the Forge.app icon to launch the forge application on your Apple computer running Mac OS. This application will automatically increase the java heap space memory for you as it launches. This version does not require the forge.command file and it does not need to start the Terminal application as part of the start up process.

The Mac OS X app version apparently requires the Mavericks OS and is not compatible with earlier OS X versions. People with earlier OS X versions should use the Windows and Linux version and launch forge on their Mac by double clicking on the included "forge.command" file.

- Magic 2015 cards -
It may take a few days/weeks before these new card pictures become available for downloading via the "Download LQ Card Pictures" button. The LQ set pictures tend to take a few more weeks/months to process before they become available for downloading via the "Download LQ Set Pictures" button. Please be patient. There is a known issue with the cost reduction for cards that have color-locked X in their mana cost (e.g. Drain Life, Soul Burn). Cost reduction will not apply correctly to these cards if the amount by which the cost is reduced is greater than the amount of colorless mana in the mana cost specified on the card (e.g. 1 for Drain Life, 2 for Soul Burn). Fixing this issue likely requires rewriting the way announced color-locked X is interpreted and paid (most likely it has to be represented with colorless mana shards but still locked to the colors required by the card).

Several people have noticed that the cards displayed on the battlefield will fail to be displayed when the number of cards on the battlefield increases. Maximizing the human panel can help to re-display the cards.

Some time was spent turning the static ETB triggers into the proper ETB replacement effects they should be, mainly to interact correctly with each other. This work is not yet finished. As a result there is currently some inconsistencies with "Enters the battlefield with counters" (Not incredibly noticeable).

A recent contribution to the code base should fix some of the bugs that people noticed with cloning type abilities. At this time there is one remaining issue that we hope will be addressed in the near future:
Copies of cards that setup Zone Change triggers via addComesIntoPlayCommand and addLeavesPlayCommand will not function correctly.

The Forge archive includes a readme.txt file and we ask that you spend a few minutes reading this file as it contains some information that may prove useful. We do tend to update this file at times and you should quickly read this file and look for new information for each and every new release. Thank you.

The archive format used for the Forge distribution is ".tar.bz2". There are utilities for Windows, Mac OS and the various *nix's that can be used to extract/decompress these ".tar.bz2" archives. We recommend that you extract/decompress the Forge archive into a new and unused folder.

Some people use the Windows application 7zip. This utility can be found at http://www.7-zip.org/download.html. Mac users can double click on the archive and the application Archive Utility will launch and extract the archive. Mac users do not need to download a separate utility.

Is there a need to repost bug reports from the end of old thread ?

Additional report:
Silent-Chant Zubera gives only 1 life per Zubera.

After activating monstrous ability creature doesn't gain it, so activation can be repeated infinite amount of times. Confirmed for Nemesis of Mortals, Stormbreath Dragon.

Petals of Insight doesn't allow to actually see the cards before deciding to draw or put them in the bottom of library.

Kamigava Deceivers' look at the top card of the library ability doesn't work. I think I've seen it somewhere else besides Petals and Deceivers, so most likely it's a global issue.

I tried it and while it can indeed be attempted multiple times (and mana can be paid for it), it does nothing on the second and all further attempts (which is definitely correct). I couldn't immediately find anything relevant in the Comprehensive Rules as to whether it should be possible to try it more than once, but a ruling referenced on MtgSalvation says that "Once a creature becomes monstrous, it can't become monstrous again. If the creature is already monstrous when the monstrosity ability resolves, nothing happens." As such, it looks like it can indeed be activated (attempted) more than one time, just as it is in Forge, but all subsequent activations after the first one will have zero effect because the creature is already monstrous (correct me if I'm wrong here).

Tried it in v1.5.33 and both worked fine for me.

Description: Sidisi, Brood Tyrant seems to cause a crash, if dredge puts a creature card into your graveyard. Forge will get stuck in Draw Step (or whatever Phase or Step you are currently at) and has to be closed entirely. This example happened after i dredged Life from the Loam, which put Lord of Extinction, Raven's Crime and a Forest into my graveyard. I controlled nothing but Sidisi, Brood Tyrant (which was my Commander, if this is important for that matter), a Zombie Token (produced by Sidisi as she entered the battlefield) and several Lands.

Oh, then it's not much of a problem. Somehow I thought it triggers ability' effects upon each following activation.

Agetian wrote:Tried it in v1.5.33 and both worked fine for me.
Whoops, should've checked it in new version before posting. You guys are quick to fix things. :)

Anyway, I'll report again bugs which wasn't fixed as of 1.5.33:
Star Compass - incorrect calculation of colored mana it gives in some cases. I've reported it here.

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker's created Zubera token have it's ability triggered 2 times once it's sacrificed.

Shared Fate issues. 1. It doesn't allow to cast flash/instant cards at any moment. 2. I understand this one isn't critical to gameplay, but still: If casting of the spell was canceled, it will remain exiled and uncastable for the rest of the game. The same is true for Uba Mask and probably others cast-from-exile cards.

Stormfront Riders' second ability triggers only once if Riders and another creature were returned to hand.

Samurai of the Pale Curtain doesn't allow any cards to be put into graveyard from hand. He effectively nullifies any discard effects, including those due to maximum hand restriction.

Opponent plays a Frontier Mastodon on an empty battlefield
It gets a +1/+1 counter where it shouldn't

In this update, Fate Reforged boosters contain a basic land at a high rate. I believe that in real life, only a few languages should have basic lands in Fate Reforged boosters. There's a footnote on a Wizards article from December 24. I'd post a link, but I get a spam warning. :-)

Certain languages—Korean, Portuguese, Chinese (Traditional), and Russian—will also contain basic lands in this slot at a high frequency alongside nonbasic lands, as Fate Reforged basic lands will not otherwise be printed in those languages. Other languages will typically not contain basic lands. The frequency at which fetch lands will appear is the same across all languages.

Yeah, that was a bit of a guess on my part. I couldn't find anywhere that officially detailed the contents of FRF boosters. Looking back, that footnote really isn't prominent and seems to show that there shouldn't be any basics at all. I'll fix that up once I'm done investigating a bug I'm looking at.

Or maybe there should be two kinds of boosters defined...

Perhaps. I've not personally opened any FRF boosters, but some research indicates that there should indeed be no basic lands in them. (http://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/2tc35o/frf_boxes_print_run_error_fetch_land_in_every_pack/cnxvpko) I've committed a change that removes the basic lands from FRF boosters. You can still open them up in intro decks and fat packs (and drafts still provide a healthy selection of basics), so they're not being removed from the game by any means. In the interest of emulating paper Magic, this seems to be the correct way to handle this.

According to that article (http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/fetching-look-fate-reforged-2014-12-24), "Therefore, in Fate Reforged booster packs, the basic land slot may contain nonbasic lands" may here to me implies that it doesn't replace the basic land appearing altogether.

"In other words, it's entirely possible to open your Fate Reforged packs at a Prerelease and, instead of seeing a basic land or a Jungle Hollow, see this staring back at you:"

I'm not sure why everyone is so convinced of this in the thread, unless it's just sloppy wording in the article. I wouldn't say the basic land slot may contain nonbasics, if I meant the basic land slot will only contain nonbasics.

I also haven't opened FRF boosters.

Oh nevermind, Wizards website is awful. The footnote was hidden, which basically says, it's only a basic land slot for certain languages, like the above people stated. I don't know why they are calling it a basic land slot, when there aren't any basics in it.

It does appear to be sloppy wording. I've done a good deal of research over the past 30 minutes and have come to the conclusion that FRF boosters do not, in fact, contain any non-foil basic lands.

Edit: Got ninja'd. :P

I don't think we need two kinds of boosters. The only reason those languages have basics is because they won't be getting Intro packs and other things that can provide basics to new players. Since Forge does have access to those, it shouldn't be necessary.

Arashin War Beast is in Deck Builder, but not listed in the release notes as a new card. On the other hand, the release notes contain several cards that are not new. One of them is Flame Fusillade, which I sent correction for, so maybe it now lists not only new cards, but also updated ones?
