Tempest Remastered mod

Postby 5enza » 02 May 2015, 04:29

For those of use who cant wait to play with this set, I present Tempest Remastered for Forge!

A couple of notes:
* 1 card missing because it's not yet implemented in Forge - Kor Chant
* I set the booster ratio to: 10 Common, 3 Uncommon, 1 RareMythic, 1 BasicLand
* Being that there are no draft rankings for the set yet, I set the rankings based on rarity, then alphabetical order. Not ideal, I know...but it's something. I did have thoughts of going through the TPS/STH/EXO rankings and creating a list off of that... Anybody have any suggestions?

INSTALLATION
1) Download and copy the 'Tempest Remastered.txt' file to your /res/editions folder

Thanks for doing this, as you saved me allot of work that I was going to do! :P

I noticed how you added this set straight into the main db instead of the way I have done it with my sets done as custom draft/sealed cubes. We both have to remind folks that every time a new version of Forge is released, that they have to copy & place the files in their respective folders so that they can continue to play with these sets.

Just like with last years Vintage Masters set which I created a custom cube for, (viewtopic.php?p=154573#p154573), Tempest Remastered has all but one of the cards available in the MTGO version in Forge. For Vintage Masters it was Volrath’s Shapeshifter that wasn't in Forge while for Tempest Remastered it is Kor Chant.

Considering the complexities of all the possible interactions for each card with another, it is truly amazing just how good Forge is at handling all the cards that it does contain within the game.

I've already ran a draft with this new set and I am looking forward to playing it as well as creating a sealed deck tournament too.

Thanks again for doing this, it's much appreciated! 8)

Your welcome. Being that I love limited I always look forward to these MTGO only sets as there is strong focus on limited play. I was going to create a cube using the current Tempest block cards that are included in the set but I ended up deciding to create a new set. Primarily because of the rarity shifts and the new card art. I feel the end result more closely duplicates the experience they were going for.

That's a good point about needing to remind people to copy the files in after upgrading Forge. I download a new build almost daily and am just used to it. In fact, I actually ended up writing a script to copy of all my custom cubes, skins and sound files to ease the pain :D

Forge is an absolutely amazing application and I would honestly say that it rivals (and in many ways surpasses) WOTC's official offering. That certainly speaks to the level of commitment on both the developers and the community!

Agreed with everything you touched on, especially just how good Forge is. We truly are very fortunate to have the amazingly skilled and dedicated folks who work on this incredible game right here at CCGHQ!

Could you PM me or post for all here, the script you use to transfer the files with. Like you, I update to the latest snapshot on a regular basis. Probably won't work for me as I'm a Mac user but I'd like to try. Also I could run it in Parallels, which I use to run Windows on my Mac, and I think other folks here would probably benefit from this handy time saving script.

BTW, I played a 3 match tournament with the first draft I conducted and had a great time with it.

I always play 3 of the 8 competitors at my draft table whenever I do any draft, and the same for sealed deck play. This is in standing with the way that the Pro Tour, Grand Prix, MTGO & other sanctioned events are held.

Again thanks again for doing this & I urge others out there to participate in this & all the other custom cubes & such that have been made by the community of Forge players. 8)

Thanks 5enza, I'll look into getting this added into Forge releases.

Edit: If anyone wants to improve the rankings, I'll update that too.

I wrote a fairly simple Powershell script (so unfortunately Windows only) to configure my new installations. The script first prompts you to choose the new Forge install location. It then simply runs through and copies everything to the appropriate directories from a source location. I've posted it down below.

There is still a bit of manual upkeep involved whenever a new set is officially released on Forge. I need to make sure I use the most current blocks and rankings files as a template for customization.

Code: Select all
# Display a popup window that allows you to select the Forge installation to configure.
# Change the "$path=" value to specify the root directory you would like the popup to default to

function Select-Folder($message='Select Forge installation to configure', $path = "c:\temp") {
    $object = New-Object -comObject Shell.Application

    $folder = $object.BrowseForFolder(0, $message, 0, $path)
    if ($folder -ne $null) {
        $folder.self.Path
    }
}

# this is the location of all your "source" files. Put all your custom cubes, skins, etc. in this folder

$src_dir = "C:\temp\forge script\files"

# Dont change. Uses whatever folder you chose in the popup window previously.

$dst_dir = Select-Folder

# Below is all your copy commands. Modify as necessary

Write-Host "Adding custom sounds..."
Copy-Item $src_dir\sound\* $dst_dir\res\sound -force
Write-Host "Adding custom skins..."
New-Item -ItemType directory -Path $dst_dir\res\skins\forge2015
Copy-Item $src_dir\skins\forge2015\* $dst_dir\res\skins\forge2015\ -force
Write-Host "Adding additional cubes..."

Copy-Item $src_dir\MTGO_HolidayCube2014.dck $dst_dir\res\cube -force
Copy-Item $src_dir\JuzamjediCube.dck $dst_dir\res\cube -force
Write-Host "Updating block info..."

Re: Tempest Remastered mod

Ok, I just added Tempest Remastered, and Vintage Masters. I believe I resolved the Vintage Masters rarity issues (that using a cube couldn't quite handle). The only thing wrong with Vintage Masters is that it's impossible to get a non-Foil P9 (without a lot more tinkering that I don't have time for). But I think the appearance of the Foil P9 is the same as what the combined appearances of any (foil or non-foil) P9 is. (Of course, I can't find any resources saying exact values for Foils, P9, and Foil P9, so that might just be personal speculation)

Anyway, it didn't make it into .39, but it'll be in the next Snapshot. Fleshed out rankings for both of these editions would be appreciated.

Thank you for incorporating Vintage Masters as well. I'm most happy to hear that you fixed the rarity issues that I had with the cube counterpart I made from last year as that always annoyed me in what I could do to fix that.

Can you explain why using the cube method wouldn't work & what shall I do when I want to do another one of these additions in the future? Is it better to create the cube and then send it to you for incorporation or can you lay out the steps for us to do it?

As for the draft ranking system, can you explain how to do this as well? Is it giving each of the cards in, let's use for example Vintage Masters, a grade as to which is more powerful or superior over another, thus vey subjective or If not this way, is there a statistical way to measure these values for how many times a particular card is drafted & compare those values to each card in the set?

I'm not sure how to go about this so if you can give me some guidance in how to establish the ranking order, I would love to apply it to the set.

I'm not that familiar with how Forge's cube system works. Personally I always think that cubes are more like creating 15 card packs out of a huge pile of cards, so there isn't really any rarity per se, it's just cards not a full on print sheet. That's why edition files work better than cubes, since they have rarity slots.

Yea, it's just kind of a subjective "this card is 1st, this card is 2nd, etc". Forge Ai does have some ability to drop rankings of off-color cards, so you draft them after on-color cards.

Yea, it's just kind of a subjective "this card is 1st, this card is 2nd, etc". Forge Ai does have some ability to drop rankings of off-color cards, so you draft them after on-color cards.

How does Forge's AI generate these rankings? Are there any steps I can implement to make the AI generate these rankings for any set I might want to get these rankings for & would like to implement now for Vintage Masters? If there is a method for this can you map out those steps to accomplish this?

Thanks again for your info & explanations on the topics covered in this thread.

Ahhh I had wrote about that at first, but the forums timed out on me and I lost my post.

We don't generate those rankings, we pull them from http://draft.bestiaire.org/ who handle lots of drafts and have a ton of statistical data. The problem is that VMA and TPR aren't available on this site, so we can't just pull from their resources. The AI doesn't have any determinations about which cards are better than which in this manner.

Ok, thanks for the inside info & the link to Le Bestiaire site. This site looks very cool & I love that not only can you practice a draft, but it also uses a timer clock for the draft. The timer does not reduce time with each successive pick as you proceed through a booster pack the same way MTGO or an in person draft does, but it still is a neat feature to have.

I wish that Forge had an option to run a countdown clock for draft play as it would really help to practice in becoming more proficient and timely when we participate in live or MTGO draft competition.

Some Pro's wrote draft walkthroughs/primers for these formats, if a complete list is nowhere to be found then these articles could be very helpful.

Yes, I've seen & read quite a number of them. Channel Fireball regulars like Hall of Famers Ben Stark, Frank Karsten & "Huey" Jensen have written many articles. Louis Scott-Vargas regularly rates all sets for both Standard & Draft play, but I don't think he has done it for MTGO only sets.

As for Tempest Remastered, Eric Froehlich recently wrote a draft guide for this MTGO only set: http://www.channelfireball.com/articles ... emastered/

There are other sites that do these ratings/reviews all around the MTG "intra-webs!" :P
