Forge Beta: 12-30-2011 ver 1.2.0 rev 12887
(Quest icons used created by Teekatas, from his Legendora set http://raindropmemory.deviantart.com)
9855 cards in total.
A new UI is being developed and it will take some time before it is finished. Forge is somewhat unstable at this time as the new user interface is a work in progress.
The first step was to update the battlefield window. The second step was to update the New Game window and this section still needs some work. We want to get constructed node and then quest modes working first and will then try to get the draft and sealed modes working again afterwards. While most of this work has now been done there are still a few areas that are not finished and you may discover a bug or two.
Enjoy the new work and be patient as this part of the project moves forward. For now, only "Constructed" mode is far enough along to be considered reasonably stable. Quest mode, Sealed and Draft are somewhat stable and you should be able to use these three modes without too many bugs and issues being noticed. Please report all bugs and issues that you notice.
The JuzamJedi cube has once again been updated with a newer list of cards. All core sets and all expansions should now be at least 75% implemented. And all standard legal sets are at least 90% complete.
Several people have noticed a crash report stating that "Buffers have not been created". We hope to have this fixed in the near future. It has been pointed out that:
"Parts of Swing use EventQueue by themselves, this means your Swing code executes in main thread part executes in EDT and as Swing isn't thread safe this leads to elusive errors like this. One of the reasons of this error is that the frame might not be fully constructed before buffers are created -> race condition between the threads."
Several people have noticed forge slowing down after playing a number of matches without quitting forge in between the matches that are played. The new UI may be involved somehow. We also hope to have this figured out and fixed in the near future. Please be patient in the meanwhile. A recent fix was implemented that should improve the slowdown problem somewhat.
The Forge archive includes a readme.txt file and we ask that you spend a few minutes reading this file as it contains some information that may prove usefull. We do tend to update this file at times and you should quickly read this file and look for new information for each and every new release. Thank you.
We have changed the archival format used for the Forge distributions from ".zip" to ".tar.bz2". There are utilities for Windows, Mac OS and the various *nix's that can be used to decompress these ".tar.bz2" archives. We recommend that you decompress the Forge archive into a new and unused folder.

One feature I miss from the old version is the ability to see the details of spells on the stack. In this version, I can only see the name of the spell (and its target, if applicable). This can make decisions about countering and so on more hit and miss.

Can you give an example or a screenshot? As far as I can tell, it shows that to me on the Stack.gos wrote:One feature I miss from the old version is the ability to see the details of spells on the stack. I've been playing 1.2.0 from 12/26 I think and so far I'm impressed with this new battlefield UI. The only issue is that sometimes on quest mode the abilities on stack disappear (usually if they are in multiples). They resolve normally, you just can't see what is resolving.

Here's a screenshot. My opponent is casting Veteran Armorer. I can see that it's a 2/2 creature. But what creature type? What are its abilities? Is there any way for me to see this info while the spell is on the stack?friarsol wrote:Can you give an example or a screenshot? I assume the color of the item on the stack goes to show that it's white.

I agree with gos. The previous version showed the card on the right, when hovering over the spell on the stack, which is essential for decision making when you're playing a deck with counters. I take it that this was removed because cards cast as morph were shown openly, but I'd rather have that bug than not being able to see what the spell on the stack exactly does without looking it up externally (or knowing all the cards from their names, like some people do, but I do not...)
Furthermore, I'd like to report that the "End turn" button does not seem to work (during a match in quest mode). Also, I understand that the ingame "Settings" is not yet implemented, but it also has some strange visual glitches when opening it the second time. Or opening keyboard shortcuts, then the settings.
Finally, a AI bug that just happened: Sherlock Holmes (easy) just cast Waiting in the Weeds with 3 Forests. Meaning he had no untapped forests after casting it, thus resulting in zero tokens for him.

As always, congrats to the team on a great new release, especially on all sets and expansions at least 75% done, from which all standard-legal sets are at least 90% implemented.
Forge also implements ante now, both in quest and in a limited way for consecutive constructed games. Thanks for the amazing work as always!
Happy New Year to you all!

Excellent work on the new GUI. A very notable milestone for Forge.
Being aware that there are many different screen resolutions and preferences to support, I'd like to suggest a couple things:
My screen:
Edit: I fail at getting the image to show smaller, but I'm trying to show that the font on the card description could scale down, and that the 'toolbar' section could move to the left side and free up some card description space. I think the bottom left message window doesn't need the space as much.
Edit: re the card description font: is that defined in the style? I could just change it myself... anyone know how?
Edit 2: Ok, figured it out. You put a .ttf file in the skin directory and rename it font1.ttf. But now that I've found a smaller font that looks good on the card description window, it's *tiny* in the main GUI.
Edit 3!: Request in the future be able to specify fonts and sizes on a per-window basis. (I know it's not complete yet!)

Ante is chosen at random just like the rules state, the only thing Forge does differently is that Basic Lands currently will not be chosen. (I've already won several Original Dual Lands and a Mox this way, which is great news for my deck)lazylockie wrote:Can you ante ANY card or just the ante cards? Yeah, Contract from Below is absurdly good. I'm also quite happy to see Lion's Eye Diamond. Really a nice update all around.

this is probably true with all versions of forge but not sure I wish the ai would play more cards though.
Tidings would have gave him an extra 4 cards too.
