Kiki-Mite Get There

Postby Vecc » 29 May 2009, 18:52

For as long as I've played Magic and understood the concept behind archetypes, I've been a fan of the game-breaking "combos". The basic Channel Fireball, High Tide / Solidarity, TEPS, Dredge, the legendary Long.dec or the recent Elfball... it's pretty amazing to look at those decklists and see how deckbuilding can be a true masterpiece of engineering. So you bet I got excited in the light of a recent 'competitive' combo deck being "enabled" into MTGForge, even in the most simple form. Here's what I'm into:

http://www.deckcheck.net/deck.php?id=24846

There have been a number of decks featuring Pestermite and Kiki-Jiki finishers placing good in the Extended PTQs this year, but that is the most successful and combo-dedicated amongst them. Cards like Gifts Ungiven, Reveillark and Body Double plus a Trinket Mage toolbox give the combo an extra oomph in the way of resilience and speed. For our MTGForge version, tho', things can be a lot more light-hearted due to the fact that your turn remains untouched by the AI.

Here's a sample decklist for MTGForge:
Vecc's Kiki-Mite Get There wrote:60 Total Cards

26 Creatures
-------------
2x Goblin Matron
4x Imperial Recruiter
2x Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
4x Man-o'-War
4x Mulldrifter
4x Pestermite
3x Siege-Gang Commander
3x Solemn Simulacrum

10 Spells
----------
1x Ancestral Recall
4x Remand
4x Repulse
1x Timetwister

24 Land
--------
4x Crumbling Necropolis
6x Island
6x Mountain
4x Steam Vents
4x Volcanic Island
The overall idea is: don't get killed before you go off. Get Pestermite into play, then use Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to copy it, and use the copy's CIP ability to untap Kiki-Jiki. Rinse, repeat, and attack with an arbitrarily large number of hasty Pestermite for the win. I chose to keep this sample version UR / two-colored because I don't think it really needs anything else to win, but other colors can be put in for additional 'juice' (Wrath of God / Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and stuff like Mystic Snake is silly fun  And there's a lot of possible interactions like that in Forge). Imperial Recruiter is key here - it helps in the way of both not getting killed and going off. You can Imperial Recruiter into Kiki-Jiki, copy the Recruiter to get the Pestermite and go off next turn. Yay.

MTGForge's cardpool is huge right now and I'm lazy, so I guess the deck I posted is very far from optimal, but it's mostly just a 'guideline' for you guys to tweak it to your own taste - use your imagination. The concept behind the deck is pretty fun, and there are so many possibilities. :)

Hope you guys have fun with it.

Hey dude, Im also a great fan of Stupidly Good Combos. If We Had Academy Ruins, Or Tolarian Academy, I'd be all over that, Seems pretty Solid, I might try playing with it and seeing if it needs tinkering at all.

Hm, I can do Academy Ruins (in fact, I can do Volrath's Stronghold at the same time). Tolarian Academy is not possible yet though :(

Not to let any tradition down, I forgot to update the deck file. :-" It's there now.

I'm sure there's other nice combo possibilities in Forge as it is now (and an obviously good number of great synergies), but this was the most obvious and simple for me to notice.

Playing Quest Mode is a great way to dig for nice ideas in Forge. Imperial Recruiter + Urborg Syphon-Mage and Squee, Goblin Nabob got me thinking of a Survival of the Fittest / Genesis style deck a while back, but I haven't had the inspiration to go for it just yet. (not an actual 'combo', but a great synergy)

Well by looking and searching through the cards myself. I think there's gotta be some interesting synergy Between the Hunted Creatures. (Hunted Troll) And Defense Of The Heart. I don't know if it's just me, or if it's been done before though. If only we had Brand. Allthough that's not really a combo.

Pestermite and kiki-jiki, now why didn't I think of that!
EVIL COMBO! Me love it.
Thruth is, I mostly make single color decks but kiki-jiki is one of those, all purpose cards that just begs you to abuse it.

Defense of the Heart and Darksteel colossus were made for eachother, as I showed in my Green Steel deck, posted here earlier, too lazy to dig up the link.

Lands/creatures/spells that produce more than 1 mana are not possible, so I still have to get by without Gaea's Cradle.
Which is really hard since I usually put the cradle in any green deck I make and sometimes even in decks that do not use any green mana just for the added mana boost that card gives you.
It also means my kiki-jiki decks have no Seething Song, which is why I was glad Goblin Lackey came along to help drop the 5 mana kiki a bit sooner.
We just have to get along with what we are given in this game and so far, we are doing pretty good, I think. 8)
](*,) = coder at work, according to a coder. It does explain some of the bugs.

Kikimite is a popular netdeck. Probably why you didn't think of it.

Yep there are several defense decks on the forums already.

Haha yes, I was browsing through the forums the other day and seen in a couple threads that I wasn't alone in my sympathy for Kiki-Jiki. Great card to make silly stuff with. And so is Goblin Lackey, with stuff like Siege-Gang Commander, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Wort, Boggart Auntie to put into play early and free. (maybe even... Chameleon Colossus? 8))

I see Defense of the Heart is favorite here for mini-combos. That's another card I wanted to make a deck around but never really got to it... the way you described your Green Steel deck reminds me of the old Wildfire / Colossus deck, which used a lot of mana-generating artifacts (Grim Monolith and Worn Powerstone + Voltaic Key) to pump out silly stuff early like Wildfire, Phyrexian Processor & Phyrexian Colossus (and could also count on a little help from Tinker, much like Defense of the Heart works in your deck). No Darksteel Colossus to make things even more unfair back then, but his cousin did the job alright. 8)

Hmm... at some point I played in a couple Un-set games (with mostly printed cards of course), Tinker+ Gleemax seemed to pop up fairly often :P
O forest, hold thy wand'ring son
Though fears assail the door.
O foliage, cloak thy ravaged one
In vestments cut for war.

When Unglued came out Garfield himself came to NG to share it with us. I just remember it being a very funny and crazy event. Denimwalk was particularly amusing.

Yeah years ago. He came to Neutral Ground a few times. Once was to promote Robo Rally with a live action version that took up half the floorspace and each participant played the part of 1 robot. Another time he just came and hung out, gun slinging, signing cards etc.
