DECK BUILDER CONTEST: June/July - Summertime!
by Resonantg » 07 Jun 2010, 22:47
Here we go ladies and gentlemen! The first official Forge Deck Builder Contest.
The subject is....... Summertime!
Yes, we'll kick this off with a Subject theme.
All decks created must address some aspect of summertime. All colors are open, use whatever you feel is appropriate and fun, but when we look over the deck, it should be obvious without reading flavor text it has something to do with summer. You may pick a summer holiday (Northern Hemisphere please. ;cD ) or maybe heat, hot summer weather, picnics or vacations or anything that says summer to you in the deck.
Remember, Decks must be:
60+ cards
4 same card max except basic/snow lands or otherwise noted.
All colors open
Any questions, fire them off here.
Deadline, 2nd week of July. I'll set it more firm when we get closer. Then voting commences.
Good luck, and I hope to see some fun ideas!

Could there be a prize like a card of the winners choice gets coded?

Awesome! Two entries already. :c)
Thanks for remembering to post your decks here. BTW Sloth, please give us a downloadable version. Don't make us build from scratch if you can help it.
I love the theme thinking already.
If people wish to comment on results they've gotten from testing the decks on how it fits the theme or whatever, that'd be fine too.
Now I have to get to work on MY theme once I finish unpacking 0605 myself. LOL

Here's my contribution. It's called "Summer Bloom"
It started as the deck that created these crazy screenshots:
http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/download/file.php?id=1860
http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/download/file.php?id=1862
http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/download/file.php?id=1859
I had to trim it, because I'm a huge deck fan.... The deck had 114 cards, so I dropped the Chameleon Colossus and some other stuff. And managed to bring it down to 60 cards:
60 Total Cards
24 Creatures
-------------
2x Avenger of Zendikar
4x Elvish Archdruid
2x Essence Warden
2x Immaculate Magistrate
4x Imperious Perfect
4x Kazandu Tuskcaller
2x Mycoloth
4x Priest of Titania
12 Spells
----------
4x Awakening Zone
3x Collective Unconscious
1x Concordant Crossroads
4x Doubling Season
24 Land
--------
20x Forest
4x Gaea's Cradle

I have been busy these last several weeks. I have added a number of AI decks to the quest mode, both realistic and the new fantasy mode. I have been play testing these decks over the last several days and they are a lot of fun. Thank you.
I am now modifying these decks (if needed) and I will add them as AI decks.

Awesome! Glad to see they're helping you out. I wonder if we can start building different fantasy "realms" as this goes on.
I've been play testing the ones I've been working on in Fantasy mode, and getting my butt whooped. Is it just me or has that getting much harder in Fantasy? Or am I making that crappy of decks? LOL

Yes, the fantasy decks can be very hard. It has taken me awhile, but I have now succeeded in beating all 20 of the current fantasy decks which are available with the version of forge on the SVN.
I find that having a good deck is only half of the answer. A fully trained wall and Wolf pet is also needed. That croc can be nice indeed if you know that you will be facing a deck with swamps.

I've not completed any quests at this time on any version. I spend 95% of my time designing decks, and playing 1 on 1 games with them. Although with this latest version I've been testing against the quests. That King Arthur Deck kicks my ass every time. I've beaten it only 2 times out of 10 tries. He's just too fast for the contest decks. Mebbe if I look at some of my non-contest decks that are more for tournament play I'd fare better.

Playing constructed deck format can be a lot of fun. I have "borrowed" a few of the quest decks and played against them in constructed deck format myself at times. The three contest decks are also fun to play and I enjoyed the themes.

Just as a quick reminder, remember all future decks must be June 5th release compatable. >sob< not the wonderful and tasty June 26th release.
You can do it! Let's get some more entries here! I look forward to seeing what comes out of this!

Here's my entry into the contest: Stormfront-GRW
White Clouds, Red Skies and Tornado Green, a storm's rolling in. Thunder, Lightning, Rain, Fog, Winds, Twisters and some chaos too.
It's a fast deck, and when you draw well, (which doesn't seem to happen after level 7 on quests EVER [6 games straight with 4+ mulligans??? come on!])
Defensively, the Fog and Regrowth cards make for a good front and buy you time for the inevitable Savage Twister to clear the decks while you plink away with Lightning and Lightning Helix spells and then roll them with Ball Lightning.
It's weak versus land destruction and discard decks, but no deck is perfect, particularly when you try to match a theme.
70 cards.
Have fun!
