Challenge Set #2 (spoilers)
by aww1979 » 11 Sep 2009, 13:58
March of the Machines: (artifacts only, AI decks randomly selected from challenge #1 decks)
Defeated with the following deck: (won Tangle Wire)
.17 1 Black Lotus
.165 1 Mox Emerald
.166 1 Mox Jet
.167 1 Mox Pearl
.168 1 Mox Ruby
.169 1 Mox Sapphire
.230 1 Sol Ring
.1879 4 Etherium Sculptor
.1706 4 Master of Etherium
.1216 4 Seat of the Synod
.1682 4 Darksteel Citadel
.1547 4 Frogmite
.1548 4 Myr Enforcer
.1210 4 Silver Myr
.1714 4 Skullclamp
.1677 4 Arcbound Ravager
.1676 4 Arcbound Worker
.1775 4 Mind Stone
.1571 3 Serrated Arrows
.1724 4 Cranial Plating
.1550 1 Voltaic Key
.248 1 Time Vault
Very simple. It's basically affinity without the nonartifacts :p If you haven't unlocked Serrated Arrows, don't worry, it's the least important card in the deck. Just throw in almost anything else and you'll be fine. Occasionally the deck gets manascrewed, but there isn't much that can be done about it, since only artifacts are allowed.

March of the Machines is arguably the easiest challage of all. I won that with a slightly different Affinity build, but its obv the way to go here.
I won the Highlander challenge with a 4c Tinker/Oath control deck, there's a lot of good cards out there, so the restriction doesn't hurt that bad.
In the Epic challenge, save for the last opponent, the AI seems to be allowed one spell only as well. I used an Elvish Piper/Sneak Attack/Call of the Wild deck to beat this.
Beating That's Big was a lot harder then the other three, I tried an UB control deck here at first, but failed to the deck not delivering or a goddraw from the ai at some point.
I eventually beat it with this:
.1548 2 Myr Enforcer
.132 4 Juggernaut
.1308 4 Platinum Angel
.1664 4 Somber Hoverguard
.1666 4 Thoughtcast
.1944 3 Shriekmaw
.508 4 Mishra's Factory
.510 4 Mishra's Workshop
.1216 4 Seat of the Synod
.1215 2 Vault of Whispers
.258 4 Underground Sea
.1230 4 Masticore
.1710 4 Ancient Tomb
.529 4 Su-Chi
.538 2 Triskelion
.1207 4 Solemn Simulacrum
.126 2 Island
.239 1 Swamp

That's Big... (only cards >= 4cc can be played, though lands can be played also)
Goblin Charbelcher unlocked. Decks are randomly chosen from the lists we've all seen before in challenge mode 1.
.510 4 Mishra's Workshop
.508 4 Mishra's Factory
.132 4 Juggernaut
.529 4 Su-Chi
.1308 4 Platinum Angel
.1548 4 Myr Enforcer
.1900 1 Memory Jar
.1547 4 Frogmite
.44 4 Control Magic
.1281 4 Time Warp
.1666 4 Thoughtcast
.1682 4 Darksteel Citadel
.1216 4 Seat of the Synod
.317 1 Tolarian Academy
.126 10 Island
It's a lot like my first list, actually :p I toyed around with other decks based on stuff like Shriekmaw, Spectral Procession, Flame Javelin, and so on that can be played cheaper than 4 mana, but the power of the Workshop proved stronger. I know it has 27 land, but I seemed to be getting mana screwed a lot due to the high mana curve (typically on round 9-10 :p) so I tossed one of my 4-ofs (I forget what it was now) for 4 more islands.

I can't play the march of the machines challenge. Every time I try to start it, it tells me I've lost. I haven't been doing anything differently. I already checked my deck for legality so I know that's not it. Any ideas?

I just beat Dude... (again, now that it unlocks a card) with this list:
.1997 4 Birchlore Rangers*
.1564 4 Elvish Archdruid
.1363 4 Elvish Visionary
.1293 4 Fyndhorn Elves
.149 4 Llanowar Elves
.1974 4 Priest of Titania
.1942 4 Regal Force
.1939 4 Nettle Sentinel
.1360 4 Wren's Run Vanquisher
.1934 4 Heritage Druid
.1461 3 Imperious Perfect
.1892 4 Elvish Spirit Guide
.15 4 Birds of Paradise
.1913 4 Dryad Arbor
.1804 4 Noble Hierarch
.1308 1 Platinum Angel
There are not alot of ways to build a deck for this challenge, since you are forced to run Arbor and ESG as your initial mana sources. The Platinum Angel is pretty random, I just wanted another 'I win' card for if I get Priest or Archdruid on the table. It's basically Regal Force #5. This deck can't beat Turbofog, unless you get insanely lucky, and it autoscoops to the burn deck as well if that goes turn 1 Bolt on your Arbor. Obviously you have to mulligan aggressively into Arbor + 1cc mana dude or ESG + mana dude... and sometimes you won't draw them after multiple mulligans. But hey, it's a challenge, right?
And this is the deck I used for That's Big:
.1275 2 Damnation
.1098 2 Nekrataal
.1944 4 Shriekmaw
.1258 4 Zombify
.1618 4 Mulldrifter
.1585 4 Baneslayer Angel
.726 3 Moat
.290 4 Wrath of God
.1943 3 Reveillark
.258 2 Underground Sea
.254 3 Tundra
.216 4 Scrubland
.562 4 Orzhov Basilica
.508 4 Mishra's Factory
.438 1 Library of Alexandria
.39 3 Clone
.188 2 Plains
.239 2 Swamp
.126 1 Island
.1814 3 Wall of Reverence
.1655 2 Azorius Chancery
Basically it just uses Factory, Drifter and Maw early, and seeks to turn the game around on turn 4 with Wrath or Moat, followed by Baneslayer. This deck *can* abuse the Clone bug (if it copies a creature with a comes-into-play ability, that ability will trigger twice), but usually they are just Baneslayers 5-7 The bouncelands are there to offset the high mana curve in these decks that aww1979 mentioned, plus they don't mess with your tempo so much coz you're not doing much with your early turns anyway.
I beat March of the Machines with a random Affinity deck like everyone else, and I beat There Can Be Only One with a GBW rock style deck. I might post a list for that one later, but those two challenges are pretty easy. I have also made it to the final round of Land Ho, but that challenge requires alot of luck (and playskill, and abuse of AI's lack of awareness that some lands can be turned into creatures etc... )
I haven't tried the other challenges yet, except Super Mulligan once... not sure how likely it is I'll try that one again...
EDIT: @thedrigo: do you have any non-artifact lands in the deck, such as Mishra's Workshop / Factory, or Tolarian Academy? Those might be the culprits...

Some of the cards in here are rather stupid and antisynergistic, but they are fun. Cursed Scroll was there just to see if it actually works. I think it does, since it showed me picking cards (which it didn't before) I just never guessed the right one so I don't know if it will deal damage!
The wishes were also a waste of time; they never impacted any games other than to speed up some kills by one turn. I included them to 'cheat' the highlander rule, but I never needed to. (the academy rector can 'cheat' to get planeswalkers, too, but I only got him once and I'd already won the game by then anyway) The charbelcher was there just to play with; it sped up some games, too, but in this deck it only usually does 1-3 damage, so it wasn't that big a deal. Jokulhaups and Obliterate were included because all the kill cards (shrines, planeswalkers, spells) are unaffected by them. I never got them with Elspeth, but that would have been sweet. Then the rest of the stuff is just various creature removal. The games were won by Platinum Angel, Chandra/Honden of Rage/Underworld pings, and the occasional lightning bolt or nicol bolas explosion to the head. My favourite was using Liliana to bring back everything that The Abyss ate against the Gaddock Teeg deck The numerous tutors exist to set up either the Angel or Vault/Key, or find whichever kill condition will be most efficient if you already have that.
Possible cards to remove for improvement: Cursed Scroll, Goblin Charbelcher, Jace Valeren (never drew him, so no idea if he helps), wishes/ring of maruf.
edit: I just realized some people might not have Cursed Scroll (from the first set) or Goblin Charbelcher (if you didn't do That's Big earlier) or Serum Powder from the 10:1 series. Of those, Serum Powder saved me in one game, but the others are unimportant and can be substituted with any control/removal type card.
Now that I have Street Wraith, I'm going to tackle the "Dude..." one again, which has been giving me troubles. I tried a green/red deck with spirit guides + Dryad Arbor, then an affinity deck with those as mana sources, but they stunk. My best list so far is almost identical to the elf deck above, but I'm going to put in 4 Street Wraith to improve consistency.

Just finished 'What hand?', where you skip your draw phases in the game.
After moderate success with both Elves and Affinity (two decks that can produce explosive opening hands (even off a mulligan), including a round 10 where I had to go all in on a 6/8 Ornithopter when the AI cast Harmonize into Naturalise the turn before I would kill him, I decided to change tactics, and zoomed through it quickly and easily with an all-in Oath deck:
.1902 4 Oath of Druids
.333 1 Vampiric Tutor
.62 1 Demonic Tutor
.331 1 Imperial Seal
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.499 1 Brainstorm
.312 1 Ponder
.1510 4 Night's Whisper
.349 4 Enlightened Tutor
.1686 4 Chromatic Sphere
.1685 4 Chromatic Star
.402 4 Sensei's Divining Top
.379 4 Bogardan Hellkite
.1198 1 Akroma, Angel of Wrath
.378 4 Hellkite Overlord*
.1675 1 Progenitus
.169 1 Mox Sapphire
.168 1 Mox Ruby
.167 1 Mox Pearl
.166 1 Mox Jet
.165 1 Mox Emerald
.17 1 Black Lotus
.1718 2 Chrome Mox
.1893 4 Forbidden Orchard
.403 4 City of Brass
.1206 4 Arcane Sanctum
Easy enough to play, simply tutor for Oath and use a Top / Sphere / Star to draw it if it's on top of your library, then smash face with giant Dragons! The AI doesn't seem scared enough of Oath to counter or destroy it, which helps...

Re: Challenge Set #2 (spoilers)
by aww1979 » 12 Sep 2009, 08:04
Hmm, maybe I should try that What Hand one. I played it once to see what it was, and that was all. I've been trying to do Dude but sooner or later I always get a hand with no dryad arbors or spirit guides and I just sit there looking silly until I die :p I tried Land Ho a bit too, but there's basically only one deck to make for that one, and it's a crappy deck :p

Basically been playing these challenges all day lol. Day off work + new challenges + inherent addiction I guess...
Here's my list for Epic (one spell allowed per game):
.1027 3 Elvish Piper
.1902 4 Oath of Druids
.1198 1 Akroma, Angel of Wrath
.378 3 Hellkite Overlord*
.379 4 Bogardan Hellkite
.1675 1 Progenitus
.1226 1 Visara the Dreadful
.1531 3 Angel of Despair
.1585 3 Baneslayer Angel
.1888 4 City of Traitors
.1893 4 Forbidden Orchard
.1474 4 Wooded Foothills
.91 5 Forest
.711 4 Serum Powder
.1473 4 Windswept Heath
.1990 4 Tranquil Thicket
.1946 4 Treetop Village
.398 4 Bazaar of Baghdad
Unfortunately Serum Powder is pretty important for this list, and you need to complete the 5:1 challenge (Set 1 Challenge 7). Fortunately since it's 5:1 now instead of 10:1 that challenge is (probably) less likely to crash on you before you beat it. It's also available without having to beat the other challenges now.
Basically, you mulligan or use Serum Powder mulligans until you get a hand with Oath. Even a hand with Oath and no land is keepable, since there are quite alot of lands in the deck. Turn 3 Elvish Piper off a City of Traitors is plan B, I would even mull a 7 card hand with Piper to find Oath instead. Just be warned that using two Serum Powder mulligans will cause you to lose the game.
The Bazaar of Baghdads (and to a lesser extent the cycling lands and fetchlands) are there to find a Forbidden Orchard for the non-creature decks (Burn and Turbofog).
That's all of them now except Land Ho and Super Mulligan. I'm confident I can eventually beat Land Ho, as I have made it to the final round once. Super Mulligan on the other hand
But for now, I'm gonna take a break and get back to real life for a bit!

What Hand... (unlocks Brain Freeze)
-your draw phase is skipped for all 10 matches
.1902 4 Oath of Druids
.62 1 Demonic Tutor
.711 4 Serum Powder
.1893 4 Forbidden Orchard
.17 1 Black Lotus
.165 1 Mox Emerald
.166 1 Mox Jet
.167 1 Mox Pearl
.168 1 Mox Ruby
.169 1 Mox Sapphire
.1897 4 Land Grant
.12 4 Bayou
.327 4 Grim Tutor
.55 4 Dark Ritual
.390 4 Crop Rotation
.1424 1 Lotus Petal
.328 4 Idyllic Tutor
.212 4 Savannah
.1308 4 Platinum Angel
.1890 1 Demonic Consultation
.1708 4 Gamble
.241 3 Taiga
The strategies I tried here were 1) tons of card drawing, 2) landless Goblin Charbelcher, 3) Oath. Belcher was funny when it worked (black lotus + channel + belcher + no land = lol); it plays similar to this deck, only Oath costs far less mana and needs far fewer cards to put together the combo, so it was more reliable.
My original oath deck had Progenitus instead of Platinum Angel, but funny enough a turn 2 progenitus was too slow in some games! Anyway, basic idea is drop an Oath asap, mulligan when needed, and start oathing your angels into play. It only loses sometimes against the burn deck or if it mulligans itself away. Turbofog will lose because it cannot possibly win, ever, in this challenge, and it is possible to beat turbofog even if you mull to 0 and let it try to goldfish you.
This deck is simple to play; the only thinking required is when you stare at your opening hand and count whether you've got the mana and oath/ways to get an oath or not.
*Be warned* that serum powder sometimes causes an autoloss during the next upkeep; I think it happens when you mix serum mulligans with regular ones, but I'm not sure. It also sometimes causes the AI to play its first turn with some other random deck's opening hand.
I used to have duress and thoughtseize, but I tossed them for gamble/taiga (which I never used). Also note that enlightened tutor and other topdecking tutors will fail, because you never draw the card, unless you were to also include card draw for that. That's why Idyllic Tutor, Grim Tutor, etc, are used instead, even though they cost 3.

Epic (unlocks Manabond)
-you can only cast one spell per game (well, except see below )
.1933 4 Figure of Destiny
.1453 4 Spectral Procession
.1932 4 Demigod of Revenge
.1964 4 Fulminator Mage
.1935 4 Kitchen Finks
.1418 4 Oversoul of Dusk
.1949 4 Wilt-Leaf Liege*
.1421 4 Wilt-Leaf Cavaliers
.212 4 Savannah
.1499 4 Temple Garden
.189 4 Plateau
.1876 4 Reflecting Pool
.241 4 Taiga
.1632 4 Sacred Foundry
.1192 4 Worship
I don't know whether Jatill intended this workaround of the epic problem (as some like Land Ho require abusing AI stupidity) but in any event, hybrid casting costs are unaffected by the epic thing. The worships turned out to be totally useless unless they were the first spell cast (the hybrids count as the epic spell) but I won the first gauntlet attempt so I never replaced them with anything; I'd have used Flame Javelin instead if I'd known that.
If you want to do it with a clearer conscience, my best successes were with this, but the furthest I got was about round 8 with it.
.1902 4 Oath of Druids
.1308 4 Platinum Angel
.508 4 Mishra's Factory
.1990 4 Tranquil Thicket
.1946 4 Treetop Village
.398 4 Bazaar of Baghdad
.438 1 Library of Alexandria
.1893 4 Forbidden Orchard
.1789 4 Havenwood Battleground
.91 7 Forest
.711 4 Serum Powder
.495 4 Feldon's Cane
.212 4 Savannah
.36 4 Circle of Protection: Red
.629 4 Eureka
Usually you want the Oath in your opening hand, but once you get it, wait a turn or two to make sure you aren't facing the red burn deck or the turbofog deck, because the oath usually fails against those. Manlands are there as a backup, and the bazaars and thickets are for recovering from too many mulligans. Havenwood Battleground lets you cast Oath by itself, and you could also use Geothermal Crevice, or whatever the other one is. I didn't bother because you don't really need them, and they got in the way of the manland tempo.
Other cards that might work as the epic spell are Eureka (or Show and Tell), Call of the Wild, Sneak Attack, Tinker, Academy Rector, and Elvish Piper. Oath is probably the best, though, but you could supplement it with some of the above.
I've still got Super Mulligan, Land Ho, and Dude left. Dude I think requires an elf deck such as has been posted already, and Land Ho needs manlands and a LOT of luck. I've tried a few things with Super Mulligan, but haven't passed about round 4 with anything yet, but it's the only one of the 3 I have left that will winnable with multiple strategies.

How did you get to round four on Super Mulligan? I find most of the decks are fast enough that you pretty much need 2 lands and an Oath in your top 3 (maybe 4) cards. I just can't see how you can get that hand 10 times in a row. What other strategies have you tried?

finished the super mulligan round with a white/red/green deck - was mad luck.
first of all you will need more land than usual.i played with like 28 lands (~12 fetchlands 4 farseek to thin the deck out later).
eldamris call/worldy tutor to fetch ali from cairo or a defender.most of the time i used wild nacatl/cinder wall as blockers to scare the AI off till ali from kairo came online.usually finished the game with a shadow creature.
also don´t forget to bring pridemages!
had to try it a couple times then i got lucky enough with my opponents decks AND the draw.
too bad that i´m never ever gonna use the card i unlocked.
btw. there is an abusable bug for "epic".
you can play the bringers (blue/black/green) after your first spell.add a couple manlands and aim for a 5 color manabase and this isn´t that hard anymore.a playset of maze of ith held off a lot.plumeveil was usually the spell i casted - along with the bringers.got living death + bazaar in there aswell as backup plan.
took a few hours to get the right opponents.happened more than once that my only spell got forced but counted as my only spell anyway
the highlander one was pretty easy.got it down at the second try. used a 5 color control deck with pretty much everything that is fun (honden-planeswalkers+some mass removal along with some good creatures)- very close to aaw1979´s version (got somem ore equipment in there).felt like a normal gountlet.
thats big
used sneak attack and living death + kokusho/broodmate dragon/boggardan hellkite/hellkite overlord.bazaar of baghdad helped in a lot of ways.playset of moat held off almost everything.once again you want to play more land than usual to get 4(/5) mana out consistantly.
this deck should work for "epic" aswell - haven´t tried it though.
imo the only challenge worth doing.belcher is just awesome.
what hand
played a normal control deck simmilar to your "boring angel" deck. only difference is that i added 4 howling mine + 4 cami of the crecsent moon(one should pop up in your opening hand).
haven´t got the patience yet for land ho or that creature only round where you can´t even play lands.
think i´ve already used all my luck for the mulligan round.and i´m not gonna waste like 2 days of my life to get lucky enough just to unlock 2 cards i don´t care about.

too bad that i´m never ever gonna use the card i unlocked.
btw. there is an abusable bug for "epic".
you can play the bringers (blue/black/green) after your first spell.add a couple manlands and aim for a 5 color manabase and this isn´t that hard anymore.a playset of maze of ith held off a lot.plumeveil was usually the spell i casted - along with the bringers.got living death + bazaar in there aswell as backup plan.
took a few hours to get the right opponents.happened more than once that my only spell got forced but counted as my only spell anyway
the highlander one was pretty easy.got it down at the second try. used a 5 color control deck with pretty much everything that is fun (honden-planeswalkers+some mass removal along with some good creatures)- very close to aaw1979´s version (got somem ore equipment in there).felt like a normal gountlet.
thats big
used sneak attack and living death + kokusho/broodmate dragon/boggardan hellkite/hellkite overlord.bazaar of baghdad helped in a lot of ways.playset of moat held off almost everything.once again you want to play more land than usual to get 4(/5) mana out consistantly.
this deck should work for "epic" aswell - haven´t tried it though.
imo the only challenge worth doing.belcher is just awesome.
what hand
played a normal control deck simmilar to your "boring angel" deck. only difference is that i added 4 howling mine + 4 cami of the crecsent moon(one should pop up in your opening hand).
haven´t got the patience yet for land ho or that creature only round where you can´t even play lands.
think i´ve already used all my luck for the mulligan round.and i´m not gonna waste like 2 days of my life to get lucky enough just to unlock 2 cards i don´t care about.
Retired a long time ago. I will not reply.

Cinder Wall was one of the key cards :p The AI won't attack into that because it doesn't know it will die after. That, and a LOT of luck.somacat wrote:How did you get to round four on Super Mulligan? I find most of the decks are fast enough that you pretty much need 2 lands and an Oath in your top 3 (maybe 4) cards. I just can't see how you can get that hand 10 times in a row. What other strategies have you tried?
I've tried Oath, super weenie (all 1cc cards), burn, Kobold Clamp, kithkin, soldiers, and probably some other stuff, too.
I think Land Ho is harder than Super Mulligan. I expect to defeat Super Mulligan with a few days effort, and Dude should be possible with elves if I can get lucky, but Land Ho... I think my best is like round 2 :p
