Challenge Set #3 (spoilers)

Postby jatill » 05 Nov 2009, 14:25

I actually don't have any strategies yet, since that's for you guys to figure out :) But I'm curious if people are able to beat the 3 that have been stumping me for the last month:

Enchanted Evening, Urza Wannabe, and Gimme. I've managed to get to round 6 or 7 in each of these, but have never pulled out a win.

One little tidbit of information: these challenge are only 9 rounds long, and the last round is a mirror match.

I haven't even downloaded them yet, but I'll do that now :) As long as I don't need that stupid Gemstone Mine (grrr.... Land Ho!...) to beat them, hehe.

I'll give them a try today and post whatever decks/strategies I come up with, same as I did in the other threads.

Okay, I tried most of them, and I haven't beaten them yet, but here's a rough idea of my strategies so far:

Gather No Moss: I tried a GW wall deck with 4x Rolling Stones, and then a monowhite wall deck with 4x Felidar Sovereign (and 4x Wall of Reverence)

Enchanted Evening: Hondens, Underworld Dreams, Propaganda/Collective Restraint, Moat, The Abyss, Enchantress's Presence

Master Warlock: Tried monored burn, but red deck, contrary to popular opinion, does not win :p

Urza Wannabe: Didn't try it yet

Instant Gratification: Tried a weird blue deck with Archive Trap, Brain Freeze, Path to Exile, and a bunch of control-type instants. It was pretty funny when it worked, but it wasn't good enough.

Gimme!: Didn't try it yet. Seems like there's only one deck for this one

March of the Machines 2: Tried a belcher deck :p Tough without stuff like Mishra's Workshop, though :(

Easy as 1,2,3: Tried affinity, but without Seat of the Synod and other support cards, it isn't fast enough

The Perfect Storm: Tendrils, duh. Made it to round 9, but then had a terrible game, ugh.

Sliver Nation: Haven't tried it yet

Easy as 1, 2, 3... (Bloodbraid Elf) - Your deck must include eaxactly 4 one casting cost cards, 4 2 CC cards, ... up to 4 10 CC cards.

---

my attempt:
0 cc ?
.9 3 Badlands
.12 3 Bayou
.258 3 Underground Sea
.216 3 Scrubland
.1487 4 Polluted Delta
.1489 4 Bloodstained Mire
1cc
.55 4 Dark Ritual
2cc
.1441 4 Bitterblossom
3cc
.209 4 Royal Assassin
4cc
.1513 4 Tendrils of Corruption
5cc
.1127 4 Ob Nixilis, the Fallen
6cc
.594 4 Kokusho, the Evening Star
7cc
.151 4 Lord of the Pit
8cc
.1857 4 Tombstalker
9cc
.1766 4 Bringer of the Black Dawn
10cc
.1811 4 Stratadon

got autoloose with this - so i can´t test it. it says use 4 of each casting cost - am i supposed to play with 4 lands only or what ? - screw this then^^
didn´t use any moxen cause from the description i think i am not allowed to use them.

or are you not allowed to use multiple copies of each card ? i don´t see that at the description.

this attempt seemed obvious to me , was the first thing i´ve tried . really got no clue why it isn´t allowed.

It's the fetchlands. Your lands can only be basic or alpha dual lands.

and why ? - the description doesn´t say anything about that.

anyway it works if you replace the fetchlands with swamps.

so much fun to play against merfolk with 3 lands on your starting hand and everything you got on your hand costs 4+ while you don´t draw land during your next 5 turns ... then run into 3daze , 3counterspell and 2force of will .... added another 8 swamps

well after a couple tries i´ve ditched that attempt. the deck is way too inconsistant cause 70% of the time you got stuff on your hand you cannot play during the next 3-4 turns.
loosing against merfolk pretty much every time , got to round 7 with it tops.

guess i should just stick to lame - oath

The challenge page says that it only allows basic and duals.

http://www.slightlymagic.net/wiki/Challenge_Mode

I'm not sure if that means all duals like the Ravnica ones also or something.

Challenge 3:
For each of the deck building challenges, you may only use basic and dual lands.
Gather No Moss (Wall of Roots) - You may only use creatures with Defender. You can have 4 cards that break this rule.
Enchanted Evening (Illusions of Grandeur) - You may only use enchantments
Master Warlock (Donate) - You may only use sorceries
Urza Wannabe (Tezzeret the Seeker) - You may only use planeswalkers. You can have 4 cards that break this rule
Instant Gratification (Might of Alara) - You may only use instants
Gimme! (Sower of Temptation) - You may only use copy / stealing cards that are not also creatures
March of the Machines 2 (Umezawa's Jitte) - You may only use non-creature artifacts
Easy as 1, 2, 3... (Bloodbraid Elf) - Your deck must include eaxactly 4 one casting cost cards, 4 2 CC cards, ... up to 4 10 CC cards.
The Perfect Storm (Mind's Desire) - The turn you play a spell, you must win the game
Sliver Nation (Essense Sliver) - Fight an increasingly difficult horde of Sliver

did surprisingly well with this first attempt on the sorcery only challenge.

4 Personal Tutor

because why would we not want to be able to tutor for every card in the deck?

4 Land Grant
4 Farseek
4 Reap and Sow

the mana "boost", no Moxen for us

4 Conqueror's Pledge
3 Martial Coup

hope you like to turn those soldier tokens sideways!

3 Maelstrome Pulse (take that, Relentless Rats !)
3 Living Wish (for hosers and, let's face it, Baneslayer Angels as well as serving as an awkard land-fetcher... 4 might be better)
3 Kiss of the Amesha
4 Death Grasp

1 Overrun
1 Rout
1 Balance
1 Regrowth
1 Time Walk
1 Time Spiral
1 Time Twister
1 Bribery (which really only shines against Soldiers and should probably be cut and be replaced with another Living Wish)
1 Demonic Tutor

1-ofs

2 Bayou
4 Savannah
4 Tropical Island
4 Tundra
3 Underground Sea
1 Scrubland

lands

;4th Edition
;

.1902 4 Oath of Druids
.1675 4 Progenitus
.378 4 Hellkite Overlord*
.1932 4 Demigod of Revenge
.252 4 Tropical Island
.212 4 Savannah
.12 4 Bayou
.241 4 Taiga
.9 4 Badlands
.216 4 Scrubland
.629 4 Eureka
.349 4 Enlightened Tutor
.1443 4 Broodmate Dragon
.711 4 Serum Powder
.120 4 Iona, Shield of Emeria
.1308 4 Platinum Angel

Just another oath deck :p It wasn't winning enough until I hit upon the idea of Serum Powder in the 3cc slot instead of Knight of Reliquary or Fires of Yavimaya. Serum Powder prevented enough of the noncombo hands to give the win. I'd originally had Colossus of Sardia and then Inkwell Leviathan in the 9 slot, and I tried Volcanic Dragon in the 6 slot for a bit, and also had Angel of Despair in the 7 slot, but decided upon the deck you see here. The deck is 64 cards because 20/60 land is not enough. 24/64 is enough, since all you ever cast is enlightened tutor or oath of druids.

Play is very simple. Mulligan until you have what you need, drop the oath you hopefully got, and win. Against the burn or turbofog decks, you'll need to hardcast stuff or drop a Eureka, since Oath is useless. Against the mirror, drop an Oath and wait for the AI to play a creature like Broodmate or Demigod, then Oath for something that's usually better.

The only catch is occasionally you don't want to oath for fear of killing your Progenitus or Iona with the legend rule. Other than that, zero skill involved.

.457 1 Mox Diamond
.165 1 Mox Emerald

.168 1 Mox Ruby
.169 1 Mox Sapphire
.1 1 Ancestral Recall
.499 1 Brainstorm

.17 1 Black Lotus
.230 1 Sol Ring
.1734 4 Cabal Ritual

.1848 4 Tendrils of Agony
.62 1 Demonic Tutor

.1487 4 Polluted Delta

.1502 4 Infernal Contract
.587 4 Meditate
.1898 1 Lion's Eye Diamond
.327 4 Grim Tutor
.502 1 Hurkyl's Recall
.258 4 Underground Sea

Pretty simple tendrils deck. (if you can call tendrils simple :p) 4 Tendrils were included so that I could use Demonic Consultation on them, and just to make sure I draw the darn things. One Hurkyl's Recall felt right, rather than none or 2+. To keep the mana base stable, I left red out. (no Burning Wish or Wheel of Fortune) Time Walk was also left out because it is worse than useless in this format.

Ugh! Made a deck for Gimme! and the first round was the burn deck :p All I could steal were lands.

Hmm, this is going to be hard :p Got to round 5, and the Sliver Deck dropped Crystalline Sliver on turn 3. Time to try an easier one!

I think Gimme is going to be the hardest by far. I finally beat Enchanted Evening with a new strategy. It sill took an hour to get through 9 rounds :| That just leaves Gimme and Urza Wannabe for me.

Actually, I think a lot of these ones are going to be more challenging than the previous challenges. I mean, how long did it take people to beat Vanguard? :p I still haven't tried Sliver Nation, but I've tried all the others, and they're going to be tough. I've gotten to round 8 and 9 of Master Warlock a couple times, now, but I can't quite seem to finish it. I'm using a Channelball deck. (wipes 16 years of dust off of it)
