Manalink Vintage Competition (winners posted)

Postby jatill » 19 Apr 2010, 12:26

I'd like to run a Vintage competition using Manalink. Since the online play is way too buggy, it's going to be a competition against the AI. Here's what I had in mind:

Everyone that wants to complete submits a vintage-legal deck to me via PM. After the submission deadline, I will create a zip of all those decks plus 3 of my own. I will then use the gauntlet mode to run each deck against a random gauntlet of submitted decks. Whichever deck does the best wins!

Prize: I'll code the card of your choice (if possible)

Rules:
1) 1 submission per person (All but your last entry will be ignored)
2) Decks must be vintage legal
http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/A ... sfrvintage
3) Deck name should be in the format "Vintage_YOURNAME_DECKNAME"
4) When you submit your deck, let me know if you want to earn 5 points by helping with scoring (see part 3 below)
5) I'll only run the contest if I get 5 or more submissions
6) Submissions are due by April 26th
7) Only use cards that are in the main version of manalink (not limited or custom)

Scoring:
1) I'll run the decks through a 10-game gauntlet. You score 1 point for each round I win.
2) You score 5 bonus points any time your deck beats me in a gauntlet! So perhaps Dredge and Tendrils aren't the best choices, since the AI stinks at them
3) You score 5 points more if you also test all the decks in the gauntlets and record the results (including which decks beat you). The results that all the competitors get will be averaged, and added to the score.
4) Ties will be broken by running the top-scoring decks through a 20-round gauntlet. If it's still tied after that, both decks win.

Have fun, deck submissions begin now!

This sounds like fun :) I'll be doing some playtesting, and submitting near the end of the deadline.

Are you going to be looking at the deckfiles before testing? I'm just wondering this because things like Giant Growth lose some power if you know they are in the deck, so it could affect choices made in design.

remember the AI is going to play the deck aswell - so you better avoid giant growth completly - unless you want it on your opponents creatures :P

Yes, I'll be looking at the decks so I have an idea how to play them.

Will the gauntlets consist of the "standard" opponents or will it only be competition Vintage decks vs. Vintage decks? I have a couple ideas I am trying out.

I think the idea is that our decks will be competing against each other.

This will be a very "aggro" Challenge, since AI can't use combo or control decks very well. I'll send you my deck soon.

Just an update. The 5 deck minimum has been reached, so the tournament will happen.

If someone can instruct me how to run a gauntlet using only a selection of decks, I would gladly help with scoring. If I understand the challenge correctly, all submitted decks will run a gauntlet consisting of only these submitted decks- so decks that a good player can pilot to victory against AI, but will occasionally stomp a human's face when played by the AI will do best. ??
