August Tourny (monopman wins with M11 deck)

PostPosted: 27 Jul 2010, 12:19

This tournament has changed format. It is now single-set only.

Summary:
-10 prize cards to the winner
-send me your deck by the deadline
-I'll make a schedule of who plays who
-you will test each deck out in the schedule and they will all be scored
-winners advance to the next round, and it is repeated for the following rounds
-see the General Tournament Rules for more details

The rules:
1) Each person must submit a single-set deck. The single set can consist of cards from just a single set (plus basic lands). Currently there are at least 10 options, I think. M11 will be included. The single-set decks must be legacy legal. Use MagicLimited to make your deck, if possible. If you are somehow using cards that are not in that version, I'll updated the Limited version before the tournament starts to make sure your deck is legal.
2) All decks must be PMed to me (jatill) by the end of Sunday, August 8th.
3) "SINGLE_YOURNAME_DECKNAME" example: SINGLE_aww1979_affinity

Prizes:
1st place - 10 cards!!!
2nd place - 1 measly card
BONUS - Anyone to advance out of the first round using a deck built choosing a set other than a core set or Zendikar will earn a bonus card.

A few questions:
-for the EDH deck, should it be a legacy deck or a vintage deck, or some other format?
-are the EDH decks and the single-set decks going to be played against each other, or is this two separate tournaments?
-are the 'block restricted lists' going to be enforced? i.e. in Tempest block, for instance, Cursed Scroll is banned, or in Ice Age block, Zuran Orb and Thawing Glaciers are banned, and so on.

As specified above, EDH should be Vintage legal. The 2 different decks will never play against each other. Round 1 in Single Set, 2 is EDH, 3 is single, etc.

Single set will use the legacy banned list (plus the banned wishes), so you could use Zuran Orb if somehow there were enough cards to make an Ice Age deck.

But it's single-SET, right? Not BLOCK. So, for example, Zendikar ONLY, that doesn't include Worlwake or Rise of the Eldrazi, does it?

I knew we would do EDH some day. I will admit I did not suspect the single-set challenge. Let the games begin!

P.S. this is the first time I am using the new Deck Editor and I do not see an option to filter by set. Am I missing it somehow or is this not an implemented feature?

Okay, I think I get it now. (Sorry for missing the legacy/vintage part) So the bonus cards then are for anyone whose single-set deck is one of those sets. I'll definitely submit decks for this one, but I may not be able to test all rounds.

You only score a card if you survive round 1 with our deck.

I'm surprised to see the single set format in a game that lacks the full card list for nearly any set.

This kind of puts certain sets at a disadvantage when there is only say 10-15 cards at best for set xyz.

As far as I'm aware the only sets that are fully in the game is 4th edition, 8th edition and Zendikar. The best cards from quite a few sets are in their also but usually for this type of format marginal cards become good when you lack the full flexibility of going into other sets for better cards.

I think Fallen Empires and The Dark are complete or very nearly, as are Arabian Nights and Antiquities. I doubt there's more than 5 or 6 cards missing from those 4 sets combined, and that's mostly stuff like Shahrazad or City in a Bottle/Golgothian Sylex. I have absolutely no idea how some of the newer sets are faring, but yeah a few like Ice Age or Urza's Saga would be hard to pull off.

All or mostly-coded sets include:
Unlimited
Revised
8th Edition
Antiquities
Arabian Nights
Legends (only 1/2 coded, but that's still about 200 cards)
The Dark
Fall Empires
Zendikar

After that, there are always the unreasonable sets :)

I built a totally sweet single set deck... until I reread the rules and see I can only play Legacy legal cards for that part of the competition. Doh! Anyway since I already built the deck here it is for people's amusement (not my submission since it isn't legal).
