I'm using Windows 8.
I tested Mindbreak Trap now and it did work as intended with alternate cost of {0}.
Can you describe more in detail, in which situation it did not work?
Maybe you can also post the game log as information?

Whirlpool Drake also caused an infinite ai vs ai loop. No idea why but it was putting it back into its hand and continually recasting it. There was a Stingscourger in play but can't see how that cld be affecting things.

My guess is that you clicked/pushed F4 / F5 / F7 or F9 before, to skip steps.
That means the XMage stops for declaring attackers or blockers but skips your priority in Declare Attackers and Declare Blockers Step.
You may not use the hot keys if you want the priority in these steps or you have to click/push at least F3 before your opponent has finished declaring attackers ot at latest you have to click F3 while you are asked to declare blockers if you want priority in the Declare blockers step after declaring blockers. F3 cancels the activated skip orders.

If my guess is wrong I need more details, because I have no problems to use Kill Shot or the ability of Mardu Hateblate in these steps.
No I didn't. I played 2 copies of Kill Shot today ... and couldn't use them.

Ok, only strange that I never had a problem to use them after opponent attacked.
What exacly do you do or can't you do?
If you come to declare blockers step, push F3 (just to be sure) you don't get priority to cast kill shot in declare blockers step?
