The missing version(s)

Hi all,
I have been playing Shandalar on and off for many years.
I played the original version countless times. About 5 years ago I heard about the "modern" version, which I promptly obtained, played, and loved for a few playthroughs. I have been itching to play it again.
I noticed that it's not available on this forum, and any mention of it seems to be "the author doesn't want it distributed".
What I don't see is any sticky, thread, or post to that effect.
Could someone give the background for this? Why did the author remove his updated version from circulation? Is there a thread somewhere that contains all the details, plus his request to remove the version from being distributed?
Secondly:
Is there any possibility that we would see a revival of the updated version(s)? Does anyone know if the author of the modern version is still working on the game in private? Is his stance on the subject softening?
Do we have hope?
Thanks for taking the time.
