All 10 Base Decks - Renovated!

A few things to say before proceeding:

I am so sorry for not updating my other mods. I've been busy for a week after I first uploaded, and afterwards I got so hooked in changing the base game that I just wanted to pump out this mod first. That nostalgia pack was really more of an experiment that I used to see if I could mod Duels 2014. If enough people wants me to update it, I could re-upload it with all the fixes I did for this time (all the fixed cards are in this mod as well).

Because I noticed ZippyShare only keeps your files up for a certain amount of time, I decided to switch to 4shared. This is my first time using that file hoster, so please tell me if you encounter any issues.

Alright, I have changed the mod so that it overwrites rather than modifies the base decks. This should allow people to feel more safer in downloading it, as all one needs to do to remove it is to remove the original Data_Decks_14. Feel free to download it, as now the (already minimal) risk factor has been completely eliminated.

Basically, what I did was I threw in cards coded by me, Wizards, BloodReyvyn, Scion of Darkness, kevlahnota, sumomole, thefiremind, and a few from RiiakShiNal into a massive smorgasbord that I then used in each of the ten modded base decks. I tried to keep the basic feel of the decks and make them more balanced; feel free to commentate on my changes and whether or not they're good or bad. Even if you don't like the modded game, there is a titanic amount of cards that are in that DATA_DECKS_14.WAD, and you are free to use it as a library if you want more cards for your own modded decks.

MOD FEATURES:

-All ten decks have been heavily changed; while I threw in a few cards made by Wizards/Stainless the vast majority were modded in. As such, be aware that not all cards in the WAD may work (though most of the cards in the modded decks should). Also note that alot of Scion of Darkness's cards don't have pictures; I don't know if he compressed them or something. I fixed the cards that I used in the base deck changes, but just be aware of this if you're going to use his cards for your mods.

-Riiak Shi Nal's mana functions.

-10 new deck boxart!

-New basic lands! The land for the planeswalkers decks (Firewave, Hunter's Strength, Guardians of Light, Mind Maze, Deadwalkers) all have new, high-def artwork/pictures!

-New loading screens! (this has been removed due to technical difficulties)



I've also put together decklists for all ten modded decks. These decklists include not just the cards but also who coded them in. This serves not only as credits but also if you run into a bug you know who to go to. Remember: don't expect too much support from me. If you're a modder and your card is in here feel free to post a fixed version of a card.

Also note that some cards appear multiple times in the actual mod because they were made by different modders: the version whose name is listed beside the card is the version that I used. Feel free to tell me if the list has any mistakes.

Why did you modify the base game files instead of simply overriding them? I'm looking at your wads and they are huge at 756 MB and 1.44 GB did you forget to compress the wads? If other mods get updated then this mod will likely cause conflicts due to having cards and function files that will then be outdated.

There are much better ways to change the base decks without all this bloat and potential for conflict.

Also it should be noted that changing the base game files has the potential to break the campaigns whereas simply adding mods generally doesn't cause that problem.

As such this is currently one mod I would have to recommend that people do not download (at least not until it has been cleaned and properly made to use overrides).

I realized the risk to modding base files and I've throughly tested the mods and there has been no campaign conflicts and anything of the sort. Everything works perfectly normal. Note that the only changes to Data_Core are the loading screens. Data_Decks_14 is where most of the changes are in and the files are big because of all the cards that I dumped in there.

Though I don't get what you mean by overriding the game files vs. modifying them, do you mean by changing the name of the files or by putting all the cards in a separate wad?

I knew there would be people worried about changing the game files, so that's why I've included the backup CLEAN files. If there's ANY issues whatsoever that prevents the game from functioning properly just override the modded files with the clean ones. There's really no risk by downloading and running the mod.

I went back into the game, Riiak, and turns out you were partly right. The campaigns were messed up and all, but ONLY because of the modded Data_Core (which again were just loading screen changes - I kind of figured it might cause some complications so I took a last-minute risk hoping it might not cause much harm: note to self- always trust experienced programmers). I did another check with JUST the modded Data_Decks_14 and as long as you only use the modded decks from the changed Data_Decks_14 you should be OK.

I'm reuploading the mod and taking out the modded Data_Core. Anyone who has already overriden the data core, just download my "clean" copy (the second download). Anyone who still wants to download the mod, again I cannot recommend enough that you back up Data_Decks_14.

You can override a file by putting a file with the SAME file name into a separate wad. For example you can override the base 10 decks by modifying the XMLs for those decks then placing them into a separate wad (for example: DATA_DLC_MODDED_BASE_DECKS). For the base 10 decks those would be:

Once you have the files in a new wad and have made your changes to your new wad the game will show the modded decks without having to change the base game wads.

The same can also be done with the loading screens, deck images, AI personalities, etc....

This will allow for MUCH smaller files without any problems associated with changing the official wads (which should always be avoided).

You should also not include cards from another mod in your mod UNLESS you change the file names of those cards. For function files if you include someone else's file then you should change the file name for that file and the prefixes of all the functions in that file and update all the cards you are using that depended on that file to point use the new prefixes otherwise your mod may very well conflict with that other person's mod when it is updated (this is almost guaranteed with most of the major mods including mine, thefiremind's, sumomole's, and kevlahnota's). The best practice with cards is to use cards from other mods and list those mods as required for yours, NOT to include those cards and/or functions in your mod). If you follow the best practice then when bugs are fixed or updates come out your mod will automatically benefit from those updates because they only reference the other mods and don't include those resources (this will also result in smaller wad sizes).

That actually works? I thought about putting the modded decks in another WAD, but then I deduced from common sense that the modded decks would conflict with the originals without taking the originals out, which could cause some serious complications.

Ah well, the main purpose of this mod was to see if I can safely completely convert all the main decks in DATA_DECK_14, which I learned could be done without issues (prior to making this I already made some changes to the original decks, so I felt a total conversion is possible). I'll try overriding into another WAD tomorrow to hopefully make downloading this less of a risk.

About the compatibility thing, I read the best practices in the wiki, and although I see where everyone's coming from I find it too much of a hassle to prefix and change pointers on EVERYTHING at this point, for just not enough reward. I didn't expect this to be compatible with other mods anyways. Maybe if people want it or when the expansion comes out I'll work on inter-mod compatibility. Right now I just want people to play the thing and tell me if it works.

It does work under a few conditions:
  • The mod doing the overriding needs to load after the mod being overridden. For overriding the core files this is not a problem as pretty much all mods load afterwards. Typically the higher the number on the mod the more likely it is to be the last loaded (DATA_DLC_2134.wad will load after DATA_DLC_1234.wad, etc...).
  • The files you want to use to override the old ones need to have the exact same file names as the ones to override. So if you want to override the Deadwalkers Promo Unlocks then you need to have the new unlock file named D14_LILIANA_PROMOS.XML, D14_LILIANA_PROMO.XML will not work neither will D14_LILIANA_PROMOS_MOD.XML or any other name. If you want to change the art for Air Elemental then the new image would need to be named 101044.TDX, etc....
  • If overriding a file with multiple items in it (like a function file in a mod) then you should make sure that all items that should be in it are in the new one (this will prevent broken cards and such).

You should use overrides anytime you want to change something that is present in a wad you are not the author of (core wads, other modders' wads, etc...).

Trying to keep making things compatible can get to be a lot of work quite quickly as the longer the game is out, the more people that will learn to mod, the more mods which will be made, the more mods to consider for compatibility.

Changing pointers on everything IS a pain (which is why it is partly the reason why it is greatly preferred that modders do not include mods other than their own in their releases), but if you don't then your mod will fairly quickly start to conflict with other mods and people WILL complain (this has happened on every version of DotP that has come out thus far). Ultimately, people will then decide which mod(s) to keep and which to throw away due to incompatibilities (those that add new cards are more likely to be kept over mods that only add/change decks).

I can already guarantee that most if not all of the cards in my mod are going to be updated in the new version (I have found a few bugs, that affect a lot of cards, that no-one else has noticed). As soon as I release my new update your mod will be incompatible with mine due to one mod or the other overriding the other one. I also have updates for my manual mana functions (the updates will not break any card that currently uses the functions as I am only adding functions and changing parts in the functions, not removing anything).

Alright, I followed Riiak's advice and overwritten the main files with a new WAD, so now there's no risk. For anyone who downloaded my old one I'm keeping up the "original" file in case if anyone still has the modified base decks.

As for the compatibility stuff... well first I want to see if people actually play and like the mod before doing anything else. Otherwise I won't be coding any new cards until late August.

I believe you can download it without registering just by clicking the "priority download" button directly on the link.

Hmm.. weird, it won't let you download the file directly from there. Well, the file's too large for Zippyshare as-is. I'll see if I can compress it more so it'll fit to 200 MBs.
