New feature: booster packs in quest mode
by Max mtg » 14 Sep 2011, 19:12
I'm very excited to show you a new feature now avaliable in Forge:

That's it - now you can buy booster packs in cardshop.
What's yout opinion on that, how can we balance this feature? (which sets to offer, how much should it cost, how rare it should be ... and so, and so forth)

Very nice feature, Max mtg!
I remember Dennis having some plans for Boosters in his Adventure mode: You start out beeing able to buy boosters from weak sets (Portal, Homelands, Saviors of Kamigawa) and unlock more boosters with more wins.

Looks sweet! A couple of points off the top of my head:
How is the price determined?
The type line should probably be changed.

So now you're
Screaming for the blood of the cookie monster
Evil puppet demon of obesity
Time to change the tune of his fearful ballad
C is for "Lettuce," that's good enough for me

Neato!
Scale the booster prices higher by age... Card prices equate 1 credit to 1 cent. Retail price of a booster is 3.99.. so how about most recent block (currently 2012) at 400, while Alpha could be 4000? Use a random price modifier, so the 400 price could swing as low as 350 and up to 450.
How many packs are available - related to the number of wins, which currently regulates the number of cards available in the card shop.
Sets represented by the packs - 40% of packs available can be random Standard (maybe latest set is always present) ; 35% random Extended (not including Standard); 25% random Legacy...

I love this feature, but I think the boosters might get lost being in with all the rest of the available cards.

@Sloth, thanks. I'm only afraid Dennis will find the forge quest codebase too different from the what he is using at adventure mode development.
@Hellfish, Price is hardcoded for now. It's also hardcoded that a single M10 booster will appear each time shop is regenerated. To change type line - of course. Today it is a prototype or alpha, where only the core functionality is up.
@Rob Cashwalker, I can set any price to boosters. We can agree on prices and balance them somehow.
There's only one booster for now. I have no idea yet, how much packs there should be on the showcase and which should be their price. This is where your ideas are most welcome.
@friarsol, they won't be lost when I enchance the table to display groups of items.
I think we'll also need some pictures to display booster packs in the lower-right corner of shop. I can borrow some pictures from Magic Online - hope wizards don't mind
Yet, we probably have to distibute these images with forge... but how?

I always sort the card shop by type then color and the booster was at the top of the list. Now if I could just buy one...friarsol wrote:I love this feature, but I think the boosters might get lost being in with all the rest of the available cards.

...so cruel, giving me a buy button that does nothing...
However, I just did another sync and can say I have purchased my first booster and it worked just fine.

I set base booster price to 395
If you want some boosters to cost less or more, just write that in res/quest/all-prices.txt

At last! I'll have as many boosters, as I can open! (pay attention to the numbers)

No, I won't commit that

They were just taken from MTGO.

I volunteer to add prices for those that don't cost 395. I think basing the prices on online seller's prices is a simple solution (example: Prophecy =299, Revised =2499).Max mtg wrote:I set base booster price to 395

Here is the list compiled with the data from five different sites (SCG, mtgfanatic, magiccardmarket, channelfireball and trollandtoad):
Some of the boosters are clearly unaffordable, but maybe with time we will add some ways to earn more in quest mode.
