Planeswalkers just a bad experience

Postby nachonal986 » 23 Aug 2015, 18:52

Hey guys, only I wanna share my opinion about the Planeswalkers... I start to play magic on 1999, and Im back the last year, where I saw the famous Planeswalkers types.

To be honest those cards (the mostly of them), disappointed me.
Why?
The way of use them, convert the strategic game into a unfair way to win, where I see +1 for add a creature 1/1, gain life, take a card, etc, etc. There no way to stop it, are many cards with this "problem", so I think aren't cards bad coded or something like this.

In conclusion, for my point of view, was a bad choice to add these type of card, always I think if you wanna have a great function, you must have a big risk too, is the basic way of a strategic mind cost/beneficts.

Other functions that I don't like it, are all the creatures with annihilator, just would be used if his creature is blocked or if the player receives demage, this card must to back to the hand or the deck or die, depending the number of these function.

In definitive I prefer play this game like real strategic game, without "fantastic miracles"

A lot of people don't like planeswalkers, and that makes sense. I don't personally feel they're anything other than another part of the strategy to account for, but I'm pretty sure they've been around since very shortly after I started playing, so they're not something special to me that were added. They're just part of the game, since I've never seen the game without them. I'd be fine if the planeswalkers didn't exist. I like them quite a bit, but they often do feel overpowered. But the fact that they are so powerful is exactly why they can be directly targeted for destruction by any creature you have. That's meant to be the risk. Any damage an opponent could deal to you can damage the planeswalker, and they start off with only a few hit points, so there is quite a bit of risk. They're definitely overpowered against a few types of decks, but most decks can at least target them.

I will say that one thing I very much dislike about them is that there's a big sense of imbalance if only one player has a planeswalker in their deck. When making a deck, you can ignore enchantments, artifact, sorceries, or instants, and your deck can still feel like it's on par with a deck that didn't ignore those. You can't really ignore creatures unless you make a very specific kind of deck, but that makes sense. Same goes for land, and that also makes sense. Unfortunately, you also can't ignore planeswalkers, but that doesn't make sense to me. You should be able to. They shouldn't be required to include in your deck to be on par with a deck that has them. The fact that they are does support the idea that they're overpowered.

------------

Although, while I agree to an extent about the planeswalkers, I disagree with the annihilator. It may be a bit overpowered, but I wouldn't call it a miracle. They're absurdly expensive. To be fair, a couple of them are less expensive than the others, but the cheapest one costs 8, which is still really expensive unless you're playing a ramp deck. In my opinion, the annihilator ability is both fun to play (and play against, even; which isn't something I can say for the planeswalkers) and expensive enough to balance them. You can play deck with no eldrazi and not feel like the underdog (other things about the deck can obviously make you feel like your deck is less powerful than theirs, of course, but the mere existence of the eldrazi in the deck doesn't do that for me).

Having said that, yes, I would still like the eldrazi as much if they only activated upon dealing damage to a player, or only activated upon dealing damage to a creature, or only when they were blocked or something. However, if that was the case, then they'd have to be cheaper (not by much, but at least 1 for the cheaper ones and 2/3 for the more expensive ones).

Well if you are playing Blue you could just Cancel it. You can also use something like a Boomerang then counter it if you didn't have a Cancel at the time.

If you have unblockable creatures then just attack the planeswalker.

If you are playing White then use an Oblivion Ring or Banishing Light.

For Black an AEther Snap would work well.

For White/Black there is Utter End.

For Green you could use Beast Within, Bramblecrush, Desert Twister, or Display of Dominance.

For Red there is Red Elemental Blast.

These were just a few of the possibilities.

but into the first turn you exilie all my library without to do nothing... I will need lucky to have the chance and destroy these card with something in my hand...

Planeswalkers should activates one item trigger by turn and no unlimited moves I think.

The planeswalkers should only be able to activate one ability per turn. If yours are activating multiple times per turn, then there's something going wrong. I know for sure that they work on my end.

hmmm, many of them are doing unlimited moves in one turn, maybe for that reason I hate them too much... would be a setting problem?

If you tell me a specific one that's messing up, I'll check it on my end. If it's not on my end, then you likely have another mod or file interfering.

I meant if you knew of any others, but yeah. I added Ashiok to a deck already, so I'll test her out when I get the chance.

Alright. I tested Ashiok and she's working like she should be with the proper restrictions. I can only activate her abilities once per turn. Something you have installed alongside the CW is likely interfering with it.

Try this.
  • Go to your game folder.
  • Hold shift and right click the background, choose Open Command Window Here.
  • Type or copy/paste the following (without the quotes): "dir > filelist.txt"
  • Close the Command Window and find the file named "filelist.txt" in your game folder.
  • Upload that file here or copy/paste its contents into a spoiler tag.

This creates a list of all files in your game folder so I can see if you have another file which might be interfering.

Alright, so I've found the problem. You've got both the CW and the wads it replaces. The CW will work alongside most of the mods it replaces (they simply have no effect), but not all of them. The planeswalker mod and Neo's update to it are not compatible. Also, various others are included and could potentially cause issues, but not necessarily.

Id suggest following the instructions in the spoiler as well, but deleting the plw wads is the most important step. Once you do, the planeswalkers should function properly.

I do not know if these have been added to the CW off-hand. I'd have to check. But I'd keep these unless you have other problems.

I did all that you said, but now I have a lot broken decks.
There exist a way to "convert all them for CW cards automatically?

for your consideration:
2010, 2012, 560 core, are not 100% implemented into CW cards.

Well, I said not to delete those first two because I wasn't sure, but I thought 560 was Neo's core. My apologies. If it isn't, then just don't delete that one either.

For converting them to the CW, https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-cZn ... kxPMk5UYjQ
In there, you'll find a file named Convert Deck for CW.exe. That file can do what you need.

To use it, you'll need a folder for the Core cards and a folder for the CW cards. You'll also need a folder for Gibbed Tools. I believe you already have the Core cards in your game folder (I'd move them to a subfolder or a folder outside your game folder, but it'll work with the there, so it's not a big deal). And I already explained how to get the CW cards using Gibbed Tools. Once you point the ini file to those three folders, you should be able to drop all of the broken decks onto it and it'll convert them.

WARNING: Back up the decks. Copy them into another folder. The converter does NOT back them up, and it changes the original. If you have any questions in the process, I'll have chat open like usual. If I don't respond, you can also send me a PM (for those, I'll get an email, which notifies me much more effectively).
