Mana Drain is actually supposed to work like that; see the rulings here.

No,I don't see the rule of Mana Drain to affect Plasm Creature they should have different code.
Plasm Creature:
4/15/2013 If the countered spell had
in its mana cost, include the value chosen for that X when determining how much mana to add to your pool. For example, if you counter a spell that costs
{R} with X equal to 5, you’ll add six mana to your mana pool.
4/15/2013 Your precombat main phase is the main phase that happens immediately after your draw step, not any other main phase.
Mana Drain:
10/1/2009 If the targeted spell "can't be countered," it remains on the stack. Mana Drain continues to resolve. At the beginning of your next main phase, the delayed triggered ability will still add the mana to your mana pool.
10/1/2009 If the targeted spell is an illegal target by the time Mana Drain resolves, Mana Drain is countered. You won't get any mana later.
10/1/2009 Mana Drain's delayed triggered ability will usually trigger at the beginning of your precombat main phase. However, if you cast Mana Drain during your precombat main phase or during your combat phase, its delayed triggered ability will trigger at the beginning of that turn's postcombat main phase.
