When Well of Lost Dreams activates you are asked to pay X, where X is equal to the life gained and then you draw X cards. But you should be able to spend any amount of mana up to the amount of life gained as X. For example, if I gain 3 life I should be able to spend 0, 1, 2, or 3 mana to draw 0, 1, 2, or 3 cards, I should not have to spend the full 3 mana. And if you would gain more life than you have available mana you should still be able to spend what you have, not just be out of luck (in the save game wait until your life gets over 30 without playing any more lands and then attack with the Serra Ascendant, you will gain life but not be offered to use the Well).
