[fixed/closed]Commanders uncastable when exiled/countered
by Nexhro » 16 Oct 2014, 16:37
Describe the Bug:
These bugs seem to be new as of CoRM15 mini4 and are severely impacting EDH gameplay:
1) When a commander is exiled by a spell or ability (e.g. Swords to Plowshares) and its owner chooses to return that creature to the command zone, the creature can't be cast from the command zone for the remainder of the game.
2) When a commander is countered after being cast from the command zone, if its owner chooses to return it to the command zone, the "EDH Commander" legacy card will remain on the battlefield. When that legacy card is on the battlefield, seemingly random events, for example a land entering the battlefield or a creature being put into a graveyard, will make the legacy card trigger so that it again asks its controller whether to return the commander to the command zone.
No matter whether the legacy card is on the battlefield or not, the countered commander can't be cast from the command zone for the remainder of the game.
Returning a commander to the command zone when it dies and then recasting it from there still works as intended.
Which card did behave improperly ?
Commanders being exiled from the game and/or countered
Which update are you using?(date, name)Which type(Duel,Gauntlet,Sealed Deck)
CoRM15 mini4, duel
What exactly should be the correct behavior/interaction ?
Commanders can be cast from the ommand zone regardless of what caused them to be returned to the command zone.
Are any other cards possibly affected by this bug ?

Re: Commanders uncastable from zone when exiled/countered

First Nex, I wanted to say that I finally took the plunge and cleaned up my play deck folders so I could easily swap between EDH gauntlets and normal magic and have been using your EDH deck pack. Fantastic! I've been loving brewing EDH.
1) I've absolutely seen this and was baffled if it was just a normal quirk I wasnt used to. Countering a commander seems to put 2 tokens (correctly) on the EDH card but then another EDH Commander legacy card sometimes just gets stuck on the battlefield. Presumably it is the card that would normally trigger and give you the option of returning to command zone. Once in a while "some game action" will wake it up, you can return the general, and the game resumes as normal.
2) (other bug?) The other case that I've noticed with a commander like Vendillion Clique is that if you spend a lot of time bouncing it to your hand intentionally, and then flashing it back from your hand it appears to sometimes add counters to the EDH card and/or mess with the whole EDH Commander legacy card thing...

Gargaroz found a way to make countering commanders work. I think it was until the original release of CoRM15 that countered commanders would just go to the graveyard without prompting the command zone popup. It worked really well at first, but one of the last 2 minipatches must have messed somehting up. From what you say, HarlequinCasts, it could be an inconsistent thing, but as of late I've not been able to cast countered commanders that were sent back to the command zone at all.
Haven't noticed the bounce/cost increasing bug yet, but it would be awesome if Gargaroz found some time to look into that as well.
Glad you enjoy Manalink EDH - it's the ultimate singleplayer EDH experience imo. I can only recommend the method of using format-specific playdeck folders to the other Manalink users. It's even better if one sorts the decks by tiers to have balanced matches/gauntlets.
My long-term plan is to build folders sorted by year containing all the Pro Tour, World Championship etc decks of the respective years, but that's info for another post, I guess.
