[fixed]Custodi Soulbinders ability can't be activated

Postby Nexhro » 10 Sep 2014, 09:45

Describe the Bug:
1) Custodi Soulbinders enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 on it for each creature its controller controls.

2)Custodi Soulbinders' activated ability can't be activated.

Which card did behave improperly ?
Custodi Soulbinders

Which update are you using?(date, name)Which type(Duel,Gauntlet,Sealed Deck)
CoRM15, duel

What exactly should be the correct behavior/interaction ?
Custodi Soulbinders enters the battlefield with a +1/+1 on it for each other creature on the battlefield and its activated ability can be activated.

Are any other cards possibly affected by this bug ?

Also it has power/toughness applied to it on the stack instead of when entering the battlefield. It is a common mistake that a lot of cards have. The engine shows/supports original cards with */* and the number of counters on the stack but the p/t is applied entering the battlefield.Rock Hydra for example.

Fixed the first bug in ba7a030
For the second: I think it's a card specific bug, but it could also be only a cosmetic problem. Could you check if the P/T is correctly set via the interaction with something like Pandemonium ?

Pandemonium can't help in this test as it effect works when a creature enters the battlefield not on the stack but by the time the */* creature enters it already has p/t according to it's ability.
I tried to use Essence of Backlash but the card is bugged BUT even if it worked correctly it specifically says in it's rulings that(besides the fact that we don't know if the engine supports counting p/t on stack or do we? ) :
rulings:
10/1/2012 If the creature's power is * and it has an ability defining its power, use that ability to determine its power.
so this can't be used either does anyone now a card that it's ability involves p/t on stack like Essence of Backlash but without a ruling like the above?
Of course if there isn't a card like that there isn't an issue besides the cosmetic one.

This should answer your question:

604.3. Some static abilities are characteristic-defining abilities. A characteristic-defining ability conveys information about an object's characteristics that would normally be found elsewhere on that object (such as in its mana cost, type line, or power/toughness box). Characteristic-defining abilities function in all zones. They also function outside the game.
So the creature's P/T is already determined when it's on the stack. All cards that check for P/T of creatures outside the battlefield in any form will refer to that rule, even if they donÄt have that specific ruling Essence Backlash has.

However, Custodi Soulbinder's ability is not a character-defining ability as it doesn't define its P/T per se but conveys information on how it enters the battlefield like Clone. Essence Backlash's ruling would therefore not apply to Soulbinders.

There are no cards that have an effect similiar to Essence Backlash as far as I'm aware.
