Updated the OP with everything done up to now. Added a notes/discussion section on the set so far and suggested plans on moving forward with where we are now.

Does the UI really need to be changed at all? You don't need the UI to actually be two large cards side-by-size. Treating it like a special-case transform card (on the one that triggers the transform) and hiding the other card by removing it from all lists and keeping it as a variable on the transformed card should be fine for pretty much every purpose. Yes, the melded cards would be the same size as every other card - but that's literally the easiest way to implement it, and it works mechanically.

That's how it works currently. A future upgrade would be to implement looking at the other face(s) like double-faced cards.

Shadows block cards that move a permanent from the battlefield and then move it to another zone.
SOI:
Eerie Interlude
Essence Flux
Lunarch Inquisitors
EMN:
Identity Thief
Faith Unbroken
Long Road Home
Displace
Incendiary Flow (check for 'if ~ would die, exile instead' replacement effect)

Identity Thief is going to be a tricky one - and a good test case. The meld card should be exiled as 2 separate pieces and come back as 2 separate peices.

Hi there,

Noticed on mind's dilation, it doesn't trigger the effect of allowing me to cast my opponent's top card--and it doesn't exile the card either, it just sort of goes into magic limbo.
