Alpha

The CCGHQ Team proudly presents another first, scans of a genuine set of Alpha.
Now you can be the first to tell your friends that you're playing with REAL Alpha cards, not cheap imitations, and make them feel like the pathetic losers they are.
Thanks to loqii for most of these and PresetM for the remainder!
The cards in this set are so iconic to those of us who have been around since the beginning that it's quite impossible to choose samples, and yet I must. The moxes would be too easy, so here are some not moxes:

And everyone's best buddy, Tim:

These cards were in perfect condition, unfortunately they were in plastic sleeves and boxes, which, at minimum, affected focus and contrast. I hope that one day we can scan the cards properly.
There were blemishes due to the early nature of the printing process, and some of these have been left in after much head scratching and deliberation. Extreme did remove dust.
Very special thanks to extreme for processing. He worked a solid, tiring, head banging week on these. The experience was made more draining because he didn't have what he needed to meet our usual standards. I'm sure you've been there and can sympathize!
A very time consuming task was making them full bordered. The old sets are extra nasty because of matching the exterior border with the small interior border.
A lot of defects on the border itself appear on all the cards. In fact, alpha is a misprint fest and by far the most difficult thing was to discern what is a misprint and what is a speck of dust.
If you think processing cards in boxes is fun, try to do cards that are not only boxed, but sleeved AND boxed. It's a miracle these cards look as good as they do. A few more details are HERE.
I hope I don't sound too frustrated, or disrespectful of our contributors. I doubt if I would have unboxed my mint cards worth thousands of dollars either. All I'm trying to say is that there is still hope in the future that we can get real scans of card on glass, with no plastic in between.
I decided to release these using the current three letter set code LEA. Change the folder to A if that's what your base calls for.

Why is the folder "LEA" (I'm assuming for Limited Edition Alpha) rather than just "A"? Is Magic Workstation prepared to use these scans if they're in a folder with that name, and/or why not just replace the older Alpha scans with these, since they're obviously better?Huggybaby wrote:The CCGHQ Team proudly presents another first, scans of a genuine set of Alpha.

Because it reflects the way WOTC does things now. It doesn't make sense to do things the way MWS used to, three letter set codes are the wave of the future.I decided to release these using the current three letter set code LEA. Change the folder to A if that's what your base calls for.

Sorry, got ahead of myself and didn't see that part. Is there a plan to set up future masterbases/sets.dat files to reflect this change?Huggybaby wrote:Because it reflects the way WOTC does things now. I don't know, I haven't looked at a masterbase in so long I don't even know how it's currently being done. I suspect that all programs will move to the three letter codes eventually, it doesn't make sense for them not to.
Whichever way it goes, it's not hard renaming a pics directory and Nyth made a utility that converts pics folders between old and new codes all at once.
I know this is a contentious issue because it's hard to change tradition, but WOTC did it, not me. I remember Bog Wraith didn't like the new codes because they would have obsoleted his deck collection, but he never released it anyway. I just don't see a need to conform to an obsolete convention.

When you´re a goblin, you don´t have to step forward to be a hero -- everyone else just has to step back.
