Deck Box Scans (DD: HVM)

Postby woogerboy21 » 22 Sep 2013, 00:11

I was curious if anyone is interested in scan's of the deck boxes for the Duel Decks: Heroes vs Monsters set?
I scanned them in for the CCGHQ team and from what I am hearing they don't typically do anything with the deck boxes but thought maybe someone here might be interested in them.

It would be cool to put them in a 3D rendering program and mock them up like Wizards does. You could photograph them at that rate, but it's hard to get the lighting right and a 3D scan would be better resolution. Does anybody have the skills necessary / would be interested in pursuing?

I know there are Photoshop actions to make a 3D box, but I don't know of any free ones.

I can do 3d mockups if I have the flat scans and box dimensions

Its been a while but finally have the first sample. I'll be doing it all really slowly as work is chaotic at the moment, but I do intend to continue with these.

Excellent!
I think the turntable is rotating a bit fast to get a good look though.

Love it! Thanks. What software are you using to do this? I agree with Huggy, the animation is a little fast.

Now we only have another 300 (guessing) to go - lol. We need people to get scanning old boxes. How about boosters too?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Programs used are Photoshop for laying out the flat packaging, 3ds Max for the box model and then rendering in Keyshot. The turntable image sequence is then turned into a gif in Photoshop then.

Are you guys happy with the sizes and scene lighting?

And as for the turntable animation, that was just throwing out there what could be done easily once the model and materials are set up. Currently it's just a 20 frame animation to keep the file size and tender time down. But it can easily be slowed down by pushing out more frames.

Lastly, should I keep the CCGHQ attribution in the still renders or take it out?

I like the scene lighting, I think the shadows and what have you are subtle and tastefully done. But you're the artiste.
As for size, you're using 1700x2400, while it makes sense to use XLHQ (745x1040) or 4KHQ (1490x2080) size, or similar. I think the 1040 and the 2080 are the critical parts. <edit> Those fit the vertical dimensions on a landscape monitor </edit>

moomarc wrote:Lastly, should I keep the CCGHQ attribution in the still renders or take it out?
I think the attribution is good, it doesn't cover the image like a watermark or anything.
It should read "3D mockups by the CCGHQ Team at http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/"
<edit> "3-D" is more correct than "3D" according to some </edit>
Perhaps it could even be a bit darker. I'm not saying make it black, so I am exercising restraint.
Someone is bound to crop it out eventually anyway, but you could move the text up to make it more difficult; put it so it's on a line with or slightly above the corner of the box, hopefully that makes sense.
Just thinking out loud. The work is beautiful and I want to protect it just the slightest bit is all.

It should be noted that while the deck boxes are actually near the size of the cards, the renders have white/shadow space around them. So if we keep the image at 1040 or 2080, the actual box in the image won't be proportionately sized to the cards. I don't really think it matters though...

Do you think the stills and the animation should have the same sized white border though? The current animation has more space on the sides than the stills do.

It's been a long time since I animated gifs in photoshop, but isn't there a setting to lengthen the miliseconds each frame is shown for, without increasing file size? If so, that might enable you to balance speed and MBs a little easier.
