I was looking at the SDCC Planeswalkers / premium deck series / from the vault cards and I think photographing them would produce better images. A few things would be required to make the images turn out correctly:

2-3 soft light sources
a photo tent to diffuse the light and eliminate reflection
a tripod to hold a camera perpendicular to the cards
a high quality camera

I don't have a photo tent or tripod. If somebody can confirm that this setup produces high-quality images, I would look into re-doing these sets.

Most likely it would do. I have made some paintings photographs because they were too large to scan and they turned out quite well. I'm not sure about foil cards reflectiveness though. I think you'd be better off with some longer lenses, 70 mm at least, adding a slight (really slight) angle to the card and having a white sheet of paper right next to the optical axis of the lens should produce nice and even white fill for the reflection in the foil layer.
MTG cards are not that big and are completely flat so you might even have good results with just one light source with some diffusion.
I think the best shooting setup would be to use some temporary adhesive to stick a card to a white cardboard background. I can't remember the name but there is some kind of sticky gummy thing that is really easy to peel off and it leaves no traces on any surface. The name should be like "Tacky-something", I believe. But I might be wrong at that.

All of that is just theoretical, my general thoughts on the subject, I've never really tried that with foil cards.

Also don't forget to use manual settings and close your aperture to a higher value, like f/16 or even down to f/22 if you are using a full frame camera. This will make your images sharper.

Well that's interesting.
Wizards classifies this Spined Wurm as part of Starter 2000. But actually this is a promo card. It's a media insert from Top Deck magazine.

So there definitely is no Spined Wurm at common in Starter 2000? I know Gatherer isn't perfect, but I've never seen it list a card that was not part of a set (or list promos for that matter).

The MTG Apps missing scans list is very out of date and incomplete, so I’ve updated my version which also indicates if we have a high res scan (but less than XLHQ) or no high res scan at all to indicate the priority of the need.
