Collectible Card Game Headquarters

Wizards latest Oracle updates to Gatherer are going to include Vanguard cards for the first time ever. This means that they will be filed under the same category as the Plane cards from Planechase. The cards themselves are also going to get a templating update to be more accurate. Both the VG Vanguard Printed Cards (32) and the VGM Vanguard Online Cards (74) are going to be included.

Was just curious if we can keep these in the masterbase (true to Gatherer) and also if whoever renders the VGM cards can update them accordingly when the update is completed on the 2nd of October.

I render the cards, let's see if the changes are important, cause it's not very easy and it's probably not a good idea to change them at every oracle shift. I mean, the real cards don't change.

It's just the online ones that will need rendering.

Things that have changed:

• Character --> Avatar
• Starting and Max. Hand Size --> Hand Modifier
• Starting Life --> Life Modifier
• Cards that reference themselves by name will do so with Avatar added after the name so as not to confuse with the real card they are based on.
• Text/Template Changes: Akroma, Angel of Wrath Avatar, Dauntless Escort Avatar, Elvish Champion Avatar, Enigma Sphinx Avatar, Frenetic Efreet Avatar.

All 74 of the Online Avatars will have to be rendered with this update, while the original ones get Oracle updates (is it really an update if it is the first time they're in Oracle?) but this is more important for database maintainers as Vanguard cards are now being treated like Plane cards and are both using the command zone plus their naming conventions in MTGO are changing.

Plus, we're missing new Avatars since the last update. This includes: Dauntless Escort, Enigma Sphinx, Hermit Druid, Maelstrom Archangel, Malfegor, Master of the Wild Hunt, Serra Angel (Alternate Art), Sliver Queen, Stangg (Not sure about this one's function in MTGO), Vampire Nocturnus, Zodiac Dragon (Same as Stangg so not too sure).

yes, but the problem is it's vertical and i'd have to crop 3/4 of the image to make them fit in the normal frame. No-no.

Does anybody know what it the role of the avatars that are not vanguard ? (stangg, zodiac dragon).

Rendering (well, it's not rendering, it's not automated) takes a lot of effort to redo all of them, so first I need to see what needs to be done. Maybe we shouldn't use the regular vanguard frame. Can anybody show me a printscreen of how they appear in game, these avatars ? I never used mtgo, I don't know.

First of all, great work with the MTGO Vanguard avatars.
Have tried myself to do these, its a piece of work.

1) The new avatars Stangg and Zodiac Dragon are just avatar pictures for the visual pleasure. No Vanguard functionality.

3) While doing the Vanguard avatars myself, i have thought about the new UDON illustrations from the (first link) wizards site. May I suggest the following (did it with one of your pictures): see attachment
Took the text box, made two new layers out of it, first with 50%visibility, second to darken the text. Cropped the UDON picture and put it into the boxes. Was pretty easy. What do you say.

Seems that after the last avatars were only picture avatars (Stangg,...) there may probably not come any new ones. So its just the missing ones (about 30). Have a heart...

Coincidentally, I posted an update in "Magic Data" thread in Rules Engine board. Yesterday and today, I wrote up all the Vanguards in text format (now that I'm thinking about it, their type should be "Vanguard", not "Avatar"...) and I tried to update their wordings as well as I could. For example, the "Sliver Queen" Vanguard you have still has the words "remove from the game", which should be "exile" nowadays.

Also, if I remember Gottlieb's article correctly (the one where he promised Vanguards will be in Gatherer, which hasn't happened so far), the names of MTGO Vanguards are all supposed to be ending in "Avatar"...

I can post a "short version" with only the online Vanguards, if they are hard to find in complete file. They shouldn't, though, just search for string "VGO".
