MtG Desktop Themes (Microprose) images - how to extract?
by spoilspot » 27 Jul 2015, 19:30
Hi all.
I just found my old MtG Desktop Themes CD and decided to try ripping the images. Since the installer appears to be a 16-bit program, installing it didn't seem like a useful approach, but it's pretty obvious that the images are stored in files like "0017.art".
Do any of you have any idea what the format is? There is an accompanying A0017.art file which I think is a thumbnail images, and an 0017.tr ASCII file with some numbers.
(It's probably irrelevant because the images are not that going to be high quality by today's standards, it's just something I always wanted to do

Try opening them with Ifran View. If that doesn't work, post a sample so people can take a look. Please post the resolution of the images, if you succeed, I'm curious what they are.

Already tried IrfanView. Also tried ACD M-Powertools because it is reputed to be able to open AOL "art" files (which is one known format using the ".art" extension), but no success.
I have uploaded one of the images to Mega:
* 0017.art
* A0017.art
* 0017.tr
The 0017.art file is probably the image, and the A0017.art file is a thumbnail version. I have no idea what the .tr file is, but it looks like it maps colors to ... something.
Thanks for any hints.
