Just a heads up, some naming errors

Blossoming Defence -> Blossoming Defense
Dissapearing Act -> Disappearing Act
Inventor's Fair -> Inventors' Fair
Long-Finned Whale -> Long-Finned Skywhale
Minister of Inquieries -> Minister of Inquiries
Prakhara Pillar-Bug -> Prakhata Pillar Bug

Edit: And the list of the missing;
Planeswalker Decks

I wish Wizards would lift their retarded policy on high quality renders, they should release them for every set! It's not like you can print a card with a 744x1039 image :( they look great anyway

My zip should have all the correct names and missing cards from the primary set. They didn't include basic lands or planeswalker deck cards in the survey unfortunately.

In light of the Official XLHQ images, I probably won't be scanning this set (except for the lands, tokens, and ads). I feel bad for breaking our 20-year streak of scanning, especially if this turns out to be a one time deal. But it just doesn't make sense to spend so many hours scanning and processing the images if we don't have to.

Are there foreign surveys?

That's too bad. Myself I don't think renders are a good enough substitute for actual card scans.

How about doing just one and see how it compares to the corresponding render? I would be curious to see how the HQ scans measure up to the originals in quality.

@Xitax
Our XLHQ images are 745 x 1040. The WotC renders are 744 x 1039. The renders are arguably higher quality, since scans are far removed from their digital sources. From the printing press to scanning and processing, each step constitutes a loss in quality.

For comparison, Chief of the Foundry is a reprint from Magic Origins.

Charlequn is working on "Converting" the official renders into scan-like images. Maybe he can post a sample.

I should have thought of that. I had a look and I must say the difference is quite striking.

ImageImage

One of these is a processed scan of a physical Workshop Assistant. The other is the render from the Kaladesh survey, CMYK halftoned and then processed as a 200DPI card release.

Interesting, they look rather different when it comes to color, especially the card frame. I actually like the warmer and brighter tones of the scan (on the left) more than of the render (on the right), though I can't argue that both are very high quality. :/

The render's on the left. ;)

Don't count the color as final necessarily, I didn't fiddle too much with it this time so there's still room to optimize there.

Ah, gotcha! :D
I have a little question: won't the set release look a little strange if the renders are used for almost everything but scans are used for basic lands and tokens and other stuff that's not rendered? I mean, won't they be very different color-wise? (you said it's possible to optimize color, but I'm not sure by how much)

Yeah, it certainly is something we'll have to look at. I've got the scans for the basic lands in hand so I'll just have to play with it and see where we get. There's a few options for how we can get this lined up and we'll definitely look to have something high-quality before we release it.

To my mind it's better to get the survey render if they're with a high resolution (like these KLD render) because when you scan a card, you'll alway have the printer color frame witch produice some 'noise' in the picture (the higher scanner resolution you'll use, the more noise you'll have).
So if the color of the missing card scan's could be fixed, the survey pictures would be de great alternative to the full set scan (witch is realy time consuming for all the great scanners of this forum, thanks a lot to them)
