I'm still seeding this old torrent, updated to the SVT. This is the link
http://thepiratebay.sx/torrent/8402854/ ... HQ_Picture

I will also update the torrent in a short time.
By the way, how is the scanning of M14? I'm really looking forward to it.

Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters Released

PostPosted: 14 Sep 2013, 23:23

Forever to be known as the "Get, down, boogie-oogie-woogie" release.

The discussion topic was started by deicidemilan at http://www.slightlymagic.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=9954

Introducing a couple of new mechanics, "Heroic" and "Monstrosity", with a couple of foils (Sun Titan and Polukranos, World Eater) thrown in for good measure. See http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/a ... eature/261 for more.

Pretty cool in its own right, we sprinkled some fairy dust around for you this time.

With 83 cards, ordinarily this release would be around 44 MB, but instead it's 160 MB. That's a significant difference wouldn't you say? Like 4 times bigger significance.

And to what do we owe this surfeit of megabyteage? Obviously something big...really big.

XLHQs were designed to fill an HD monitor or TV screen, 1920x1080. But 4K screens are out now, and the resolution of those is in the neighborhood of 3840×2160 for TV and 4096×2160 for cinema. So to view a card on one of those, and fill the screen top to bottom in landscape mode, we need around 2000 pixels.

Our newest processor woogerboy21 apparently had a lot of time on his hands, and simultaneously felt that I had too much. So, I'm proud to release, for the first time ever, something I've only been able to talk about up till now: not Crops, not Fulls, not XLHQs, but 4KHQs!

You can't handle it, it's much too large for your puny browser and your diminutive, underspecced monitor. But view if you must:
http://postimg.org/image/af049y52h/full/

What does this mean for the future? Will we continue to make 4KHQs a part of our releases? They sure take up a lot of hard drive space and bandwidth to transfer.

Do 4KHQs have any practical value whatsoever?
Are we too far ahead of our time?

I know what I think, but let me know what you think. And in the meantime, enjoy this epic release by availing yourselves of the torrent file attached below.

And now, the
CREDITS:
Set purchased by woogerboy21.
Set scanned by woogerboy21.
Set processed by woogerboy21.

Oh yeah, a one man triple team. True dedication to the cause, the woogster is not messing around. And finally,
Quality assurance and sage guidance by extreme.

Thanks woogerboy21 and huggybaby!

I'm not really convinced that the public needs 4KHQs. We just store them in case some dust is missed, or we need to adjust color or brightness for a re-release, etc. Working from the 600 dpi images ensures the highest quality output.

The problems with digital images occur during enlargement. Pixelation occurs, where there should be a smooth transition across the image, there is a jagged transition instead (or a blurry transition depending on how your application scales things). The problem with 600 dpi scans is that they reveal printer's moire and dot pattern, which is almost synonymous to pixelation. As a result, I don't see there being any real benefit to having them, not to mention the extra bandwidth and storage required. What do you guys think?

Edit: are the 4KHQs the special surprise?

Yes. Special surprise. :)

I think the difference between these 600 dpis and what we store is that these have been processed for the public.

Personally I like the 600dpi images but realistically there kept in the event mistakes are made and corrections need to be done. Once a release is presented there is a very low probability of there usage. I would think someone like extreme could speak more to the historical reasoning.

I personally try and keep the perspective cropped 600dpi untouched images myself so other alterations can be performed if wanted.

Its up to the core team as to if the larger images will continue and if so and your concerned with the dot pattern etc the filters applied to the smaller images can be applied to the released 600dpi images as well.

I had to go out of town. When I left, four people were seeding and I guess they were hit and runners.
Anyway, I'm back on the case and you guys should have everything before long!

Hate to have to complain, but there's something not right about these fulls. They're blurry and don't have the right edge thickness:

It does appear the framing is off. I'll get a hold of the guys and find out what they want to do about things. Sorry about that, there will be some growing pains as new members are brought onto help process sets.
