Those of you who keep a close eye on the Daily MTG articles on Wizards' website will have seen the following two articles posted this morning.

Short Announcement
Core Set Changes Begin Summer 2009

Detailed Announcement
Recapturing the Magic with Magic 2010

Image

As it stands, this is a major change in the way Magic will be perceived, both by newcomers and old veterans. I've summarized the main points of the articles below for those wanting a quick read.
  • Core Sets will now behave much like the first set of each block in that it will have 249 Cards: 101 Commons, 60 Uncommons, 53 Rares, 15 Mythic Rares, 20 Basic Lands.
  • They will be released annually and named after the coming year (like car models).
  • Limited Format tournament play will be based around each new set.
  • Each set will have new cards.
  • Almost half of the non-land cards are reprints leading us to approximate numbers of approximately 100 New Cards and approximately 129 Reprints. (Estimates excluding Basic Lands).
  • Out of the 16 cards printed in every Core Set so far, 8 are leaving. Anyone hazard any guesses as to which 8 and whether WoG sticks around?
  • Dual Lands: They're all going! No Pain Lands, Shock Lands, Fetch Lands or Filter Lands. We're getting new "risk-averse" lands (read: no life loss) so count those in the 100 or so new cards that are being released.
  • The 5 Lorwyn Planeswalkers return as Mythic Rares (meaning Jace Beleren will have been printed 4 times and Chandra Nalaar 3 times by M10!).
  • 4 other Mythic Rares will be older Rares reprinted and elevated to a Mythic status.
  • Out of 15 Mythic Rares, that will leave 6 NEW Mythic Rares.

Start the rumour engine rolling.

Three new cards already spoilt:

Silence
1W - Instant
Your opponents can't cast spells this turn.

Wall of Frost
1UU - Creature - Wall - 0/7
Whenever Wall of Frost blocks a creature, that creature doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.

Capricious Efreet
4RR - Creature - Efreet - 6/4
At the beginning of your upkeep, choose target nonland permanent you control and up to two target nonland permanents you don't control. Destroy one of them at random.

After further scrutinizing, one can also notice the following slightly less useful info:
  • New artwork has been commissioned for some of the old reprints (such as Black Knight).
  • Card rarities are being changed (Serra Angel has been demoted back to being Uncommon).
  • Wizards of the Coast is now represented as an LLC instead of Inc. on the bottom of the cards.
  • 5 Intro Packs, Fat Packs, 15 Card Boosters and 6 Card Boosters (eurrghhh) will be release.
  • Set rotation changes such that two core sets will be legal at the same time for 15 months. i.e. M11 being released in July 2010 will not kick out M10. The new block in October 2011 will do that instead. So each whole block will rotate out with a Core Set attached to it like a little leech. This year 10th Edition will rotate out when M10 comes into play to ease the transition into the new system. 10th and M10 will not be legal at the same time, whereas M10 and M11 will be from July 2010 to October 2011.

Also note the use of the word "cast" instead of "play" on Silence. I really hope that's an error they fix before printing, because if official vocab returns to "cast", things will get very confusing.

Looks like WoTC wants more money. More sets -> more money. I was hoping they'll release 3d un* set in summer 2010 (

Well, the speculation at the moment is that they're going to go back to using the word cast but use it to mean spells played by paying their mana cost while played can apply to any other means. For example, one plays a land. One doesn't cast a land. Then again, a land isn't a spell. So Silence would not stop opponents from playing a spell by other means. At least that's the consensus at the moment.

While that might make some sort of sense, I still hope that's not what they do. I wouldn't want Maelstrom Archangel to be able to get around Silence.

I was thinking what a nice simple card Silence was, and now it's complicated again. #-o

Some good, some bad with this.

Thing I like best is that whole sets will now rotate in & out together every Autumn when a new main set is released. It will make knowing what is legal in standard much easier to remember! :)

How about the fact that the 5 planeswalkers are being reprinted. Gah! If I want one of them, I'll open a Lorwyn pack where I don't have the worry of MYTHIC rares...

Well the new names of the zones are pretty retarded Id say-exile/void is fine to some extent, but "battlefield"?Wtf?Are we shooting at us with laser pistols?Or maybe WotC is planing to do a sci-fi edition...Really I find these things pretty dumb.
Still, I was firstly worried that they would really not reprint Wrath of God, but I was relieved when I saw this:

The Image isnt that nice, but its there and thats what counts :-)

You know that this is a custom render and just a wish so Wrath of God makes it into M10.
I haven't seen a post / article at wizards considering if it makes or doesn't make into the new set so we still don't know.
