WotC sues "Hex" developer Cryptozoic
by Nexhro » 19 May 2014, 21:55
A heads up to developers seeking to create something "similiar to Magic", this news isn't the freshest anymore, but still recent.
Seeing how Wizos have ignored other prominent releases that clearly incorporate elements apparently falling under both trademarks and copyrights owned by them, it's somewhat awkward to see them go after a developer now that most of the work for creating their game has been done.
Granted, "Hex" blatantly copies elements like the life total of 20, 60 card deck size, 7 card starting hand, casting cost, p/t and more, but considering this was originalyl a Kickstarter campaign and has been in development for about a year now, it just seems mean to drag Cryptozoic to court at this very point of time.
To me, it looks like Wizards sees their cash cow Magic Online in danger, given that Hex doesn't charge money for acquiring cards, albeit featuring a much, much smaller pool (for now).
You can find more details (and links to more details) as well as a solid discussion on the matter over at Rock, Paper, Shotgun or just use the easy mode.
Edit: Moved this from off-topic to general as it might concern devs who want to start similiar projects. If inappropriate, feel free to move it back to where it came from.

A classic case of lawfare. They have no case, but are hoping the legal system fails (e.g., idiot jury, incompetent defense, etc.) or that their target is simply unable to afford a proper defense.

Cryptozoic's "copying" of MtG rules is irrelevant, game copyright doesn't cover game systems or rules.
