Question about double strike

Postby CoryD » 02 Jun 2010, 04:56

I am relatively new to Magic, but I would like to believe that I have a firm grasp of the rules, new and old. I have been playing with some friends that have played since Magic started, so they are stubborn in their ways. Here's my question. My friend had a 3/3 creature with double strike, and attacked. I blocked with a 1/1. I know that it deals first strike damage & regular combat damage. My friend says that since the first strike damage kills my creature, the regular combat damage comes through to hit my life total. I thought since I blocked, it's blocked. My creature dies. Done and done. He didn't have trample or anyhthing special. Please help!

You are correct. Without trample a blocked creature doesn't do any damaga to player.

Regardless of double strike? So I can confidently resume my arguement, and actually be correct?

yes, unless an effect says so, a creature that was blocked remains blocked for the whole combat, no matter what happens to the blocker. only tramplers deal damage to players when blocked
___

where's the "trust me, that will work!" switch for the compiler?

Unless an attacker has trample, as soon as it's 'marked' blocked (which happens when you declare at least one creature as a blocker blocking that creature), none of its combat damage can reach the player/planeswalker it's 'aimed' at. Period.

That should make it easy to explain to your friend.
