Thanks Snacko.

Nyth, you can use a password protected rar, or put it up at MediaFire with a password.

<edit>Also, 2 to 3 and 3 to 2 doesn't work, since MWS uses from one to three letters now.
How about something like "Current MWS to New Codes"?

I think Nyth's list is an accurate representation of what the new descriptions would be. I only have three changes I would suggest.

First, and least inconsequential, Prerelease is on there twice. Once at the very bottom and once paired with the Release.
Second, considering that other sets with numbers in their name (Fifth Dawn, Tenth Edition and Portal Second Age) have numbers in their codes (5DN, 10E, and PO2 respectively) Portal Three Kingdoms should be P3K (which will really screw us up in 3000 AD and they release that new Portal set).
Finally, I feel Master's Edition should be ME1 rather than MED so we will have ME1 and ME2.
I like being bad... it makes me happy...

Nyth's list looks very workable.

Also, his program looks like it is the answer we've needed. I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl!

Thanks for your work on this Nyth! 8)

Looks OK to me. We need to hear from the guys who make bases, everything hinges on the base.

Finally, I feel Master's Edition should be ME1 rather than MED so we will have ME1 and ME2.
With regards to the codes, I've followed the Wizards internal naming system as much as possible which explains why Portal Three Kingdoms is PTK and not P3K and Master's Edition is MED and not ME1.

I've taken a few liberties with all the other "sets" that don't have internal names (that I know of at least) so please have a look and see if I've used any outrageously bad codes.

Similarly I am going to stress from now, and not in February, that Conflux is going to be a problem set if we stick to Wizards name of CON. If you have ever tried creating a directory with CON as the name, you will see what I mean. Con is a reserved DOS keyword and because Microsoft never really retired the command prompt, it cannot be used as a directory name. I'm not sure if this is the same on OSX and UNIX based systems.

Given all of that, I would suggest that the list should maintain Wizards naming conventions as much as possible bar the few odd cases such as Conflux.

We will be providing users the option of using either naming scheme with the next torrent release, the only question is which we will use as the default. This is common sense. We are looking to the future, and MWS is, after all, becoming obsolete. We will see what scheme Magic Playtable uses, I'm guessing it will be the new one.

Hi all,

Just wondering if this plan is in motion as it's been nearly 3 months since the last post.

Cheers.

For now, the plan is to release the new torrent using the current codes, otherwise too many things would break. However, we plan to include a utility that will allow renaming of sets back and forth between current MWS and correct three letter. That's the best compromise I could come up with.

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but any news on this ?

It seems the vote was quasi-unanimous in favor of change but current bases still use the old naming convention.

Having to deal with two different set naming convention (the official three letter one, and the old outdated one) is quite cumbersome as it prevents a lot of programs easily sharing data (deck lists, card pictures, etc).

I think all we need is a simple renaming utility but there seems to be no interest.

Thanks for your reply. I must be missing something, because this renaming utility feels like a couple minutes job to code as long as you have a coding language you're familiar with.

Can you list me what it would have to do ?

- renaming set folders to the new convention
- reading all .mwDeck files and doing the same thing

Anything else ?

Because the coding part of this is really like a couple minutes job. I know I can code this in matlab in that much time. The only issue is that matlab is not a usable language for the general public, so you would need someone familiar with a language that is. But seriously, the task is so negligible that anyone with some knowledge of file interaction in any classical language (C, Python, ...) would be able to do this in the batting of an eye. It's a simple string replace !

I saw a Python script floating somewhere in these forums that was supposed to do something like this ?

Hey,

Thanks for the interest. I'm out of town right now so can't reply atm. I've outlined my ideas elsewhere a few times. I'll provide details when I get back to a real keyboard.

Thx,
