Momir Basic - A new way to play
by jatill » 29 Mar 2009, 19:44
If you're already familiar with the Momir Basic format from Magic Online, you'll be happy to know that it is now implemented in manalink as well!
For everyone else, here's how the format works.
Make a deck with 60 basic lands and nothing else. Start a dual, giving both you and the opponent that deck.
Use debug mode to put Momir into play (F12 -> G -> choose 'green' and 'enchantment' -> M -> Enter).
Momir has the following ability:
X, Discard a card: Put a random creature with converted mana cost X into play.
Use this ability once per turn when you could play a sorcery.
So you and the computer (or friend) battle it out using only random creatures. It's a great way to see all the creatures the game has to offer. It's a blast, I can almost guarantee that you'll love it.
Enjoy!

This sounds awesome! I didn't even know there was a debug mode :p I'll definitely give this a try; it sounds easier than building my 499 card decks that basically do the same thing. I suppose I can throw in the spells and land into a deck and use Momir to save room on creatures, since the reason for such a big deck is just to have fun and unusual/rare combinations and a different game every time with the same deck, and not necessarily to win. This will let me fit in a lot more cards that way under the same principle. (499 is a hard-coded limit to deck size, it seems, as well as 200 differently named cards in one deck, but probably I'm the only one to hit that)

I'm going to sticky this for awhile as I think EVERYONE should be made aware of this!
Thanks for this jatill, it should prove to be most interesting.
We tried this with MWS a while back and it was ok, but if I remember, we had to use dice rolls and a list of creatures with numbers associated with them to generate the random selection that is best done by a computer.
There was also this site too: http://www.snazzorama.com/magic/mv.html
Adding Momir Basic to ManaLink will prove to be a blast to play and I predict, extremely addicting.
You have created a monster jatill!
Thanks for guaranteeing that I will spend even more time playing ManaLink!
BTW, wouldn't it be great if we could implement all the Vanguard cards into ManaLink some how?
It would mean that I would never get a stitch of real life work done ever again!
One of the things I do regret about loosing the info at the old forum is that I had written a sticky that described the entire debug mode and how to use it. I thought, if I do say so myself, that it was a real good explanation of these features that Mok had built into ManaLink.
I guess I'm going to have to write that post all over again when I have the time.

Seen it and thought to myself I have to be misreading this card when I downloaded the update 2 days ago. Wow this is a cool new format. I've made several house rule games and will be adding this one to the list. I remember back when Inquest used to have ideas for MTG house rules.

Seems doable to me, as long as you don't mind debugging them into play. I toyed with the idea of momir automatically giving you +1 cards and + 4 life, but decided against it.Bog Wraith wrote:BTW, wouldn't it be great if we could implement all the Vanguard cards into ManaLink some how?

Hey guys first off I just wanna thank all the coders and volunteers who have revived this classic. Your hard work is veerrry much appreciated.
This Momir play is awesome, however i just wanted to point out its kind of a race to get 10 mana, then it becomes a game of cast progenitus then use the leftover mana to pump momir again. The computer always pumps ten in when it can, so no one really gets progenitus cause of summoning sickness and the legends rule.
The way I found around this is to debug in a land equilibrium when i get 9 lands and even out the computers lands so it keeps the game random. Also I usually include a font of mythos to keep from running out of cards.

The game is commonly over for me at 8-9 mana. If you can't win the game with 8 mana creatures your not playing right. If you want to add Land Equi or other cards thats fine but the game is not meant to allow you to play a land and drop a creature every turn.
Part of the beginning is the presence of mind to know if your going to cast your first creature on turn 1 or turn 2 or turn 3. The variance there can prevent you from running out of cards much earlier but having a much more potential at being aggressive.
Or you save up and maybe lay down your first creature at 3 mana then your guaranteed the ability to drop creatures every turn up to 8 mana easily. This is a real MTGO format and while its very luck based there is a lot of strategies on when to cast your first creature with momir and other factors.

All that said, I'd like a couple more 10 mana creatures in the game to avoid ALWAYS getting Progenitus. Suggestions?monopoman wrote:The game is commonly over for me at 8-9 mana. Is Momir implemented in ManaLink 201? Because I don't see it at the green enchantment list (Debug mode)

It shows in my list under green enchantments (or blue, or gold). But you need to have a more recent patch, it is NOT included in 2.01.mathusalem wrote:GOLD enchantment list

Damn it! Every time the game tries to put Momir into play crashes.
I'm trying it at Duel -> Solo Duel and follow the instructions. I also noticed that 'new' cards don't have images and when it crashes the alert window title says: Magic:The Gathering - Manalink v2.00 alpha. Any help?
Thanks!
