Difficulties playing online

Hello,
i'm trying to play online with a friend but unfortunately we can't manage.
I gave him my IP address (not the local one) like xx.xx.xx.xx:36743 and he can connect (the chat says he connected) but it seems like there's no other player on his client and on mine too. I'm on the server side and the slot is open but it just doesn't show him when he connects.
I unlocked the UDP/TCP ports on my router in case anyone asks.
I'm on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
