How do I update Forge?
by Seravy » 16 Oct 2024, 03:47
I thought I might as well return to playing this game after ignoring it for 5 or 6 years.
Unfortunately it's not as simple as downloading the files as I remember I made a lot of changes locally, quite a few of which were never added to the main repository, so I'd need my own source code and merge stuff and recompile. I pretty much have to update as the game became way too unstable ever since I switched to my current computer which runs Windows 10 and newer Java instead of whatever OS the previous one had, and by unstable I mean crashing every second or third game level unstable, that's why I stopped playing back then.
The good news, I still have my login and password saved in the browser for git.cardforge.org.
The other good news, it doesn't seem to be github which locked me out by the 2FA madness recently so I can probably still use this.
The bad news, the URL no longer works, so where do I go to access it nowadays? I don't have my source files locally anymore.
Also, anyone knows where the game stores the path to the "User" folder? The game is on a different drive now and it still insist to read from C:\Games\MtgForge and crashes on launch as the Games folder is now on the E drive. I tried looking through all the files with a text search for the path but found nothing and I don't remember where to set that.

Download the latest version of the game here: https://downloads.cardforge.org/dailysnapshots/
I suggest that you completely reinstall the game, and then move your decks and image files to the new install location.

I hope they have improved the game AI performance, so we don't have to wait 5 minutes for the next move everytime that are 15-20+ cards in the game field.
The game engine seems faster, but I have to play more to be sure. Another thing thing that I noticed is that the game graphics seems to be more bright and polished and less pixelized, specially on PC version.
About new content...I dunno. I hope They increase the Adventure Mode with more new enemies, dungeons, and specially more bosses and mini-bosses. The Magic multiverse is so huge and has so many characters... I would love to stumble upon some nasty villains, like Volrath, Mishra, Crovax, Sorin Markov, Rakdos, Yaugmoth, Nicol Bolas, and their minions. A villain like Nicol should be a pain to deal with, not just because he's hard to defeat, but because after you defeat him, he comes after you in the worldmap. He also improved his deck to crush the one you used against him. Other characters try to undermine your progress, or take your ressources, raiding villages (raids become more frequent after you piss some bosses)... Other bosses you need to get some reputation before starting to get their attention... Otherwise, some minions are enough to deal with the trouble (you).
Heroes are there too-- they are looking for some challenge, or want to test you, or don't like your colors (DIE, HELLSPAWN!!), others don't have many scruples and want your stuff, others just duel for fun.
Just some ideas...

I went looking for an explanation about this new "installer" version and can't find anything. Bitdefender immediately identifies an "unsolved item" in the mobile .jar and ABSOLUTELY refuses to let me unpack it to upload it to VirusTotal. The game apparently requires this MOBILE version jar to operate the desktop version, so, technically unplayable for me, now.

It's a java.exe installer. You need JRE (Java Runtime Environment) to run the installer. You must have it already, because many videogames require it, too. Install JRE x64 and x32 and double click the Forge Installer. If Windows tells you that can't open the file, it'll ask you to choose a program who can, choose Java from the list. If you don't see Java or JRE in the list, choose the option to look for more programs, scroll trough the list and choose Java, click the option to select it as default APP, and just run the Forge jar installer.
One last thing - the PC version doesn't let you install it on the default directory. It ll say its taken already. You must create a new folder, for example, in Downloads folder. Don't forget to download the extra content (skins, achievements, missions, etc) on the first time you run this new version, in game options. In further updates, all you have to do is to overrun the installer over. I hope to have helped.
UPDATE: Now you can still replace the game folder by erasing it from your disk and simply extract the most recent version from the .bz2 file ( forge-installer-2.0.00-SNAPSHOT-11.09.tar.bz2 ), downloaded from https://downloads.cardforge.org/dailysnapshots/ in replace of the old one. Just use WinZip. You don't need the installer .jar file.
UPDATE: version 2.0.01 is out! It's still pre-releasing, but looks like it already contains Foundations (FDN) block. I du no if there are more changes...

Ok, I guess I'll download the 2.0 version then and hope any bugs I fixed on my fork like the AI having no logic for bounce spells have been fixed in those 6 years. It doesn't look like the old git forks exist anymore.
...well, the installer worked and the game can be started, I guess the next thing to do is chew through my "Res" folder and see which files have to be replaced there.

It is an installer for Java.exe. To launch the installer, you must have the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Many video games also require it, therefore you must already have it. Double-click the Forge Installer after installing JRE x64 and x32 versions.

It has some new effects (such as summoning sickness that now appears to be a portal), but I haven't tested everything yet. Perhaps the most significant change, though, is that the PC edition now includes a Java installer that installs the game in a folder (it essentially simply extracts it; an install.exe file does the same thing).
