Has anyone played Legend of the Five Rings?
by mtgrares » 31 Mar 2011, 19:26
I was just wondering what people thought of Legend of the Five Rings? (The card game, not the RPG.) I've only taken a glance at it but it seem very complicated (in a good way). There are 8 clans and multiple ways to win, so there is a lot of variety. I also like the feudal Japan style of art, although the game doesn't seem to have anything like Magic's Gatherer so it is hard to see the artwork.

I've played it, though not for a long time.
... IMHO, give it a pass. You won't find a bigger proponent of Japanese culture, but... trust me, give it a pass.

Yeah it is very fun. Not sure why you would not like to try it. It does things that magic does not like at the big events if you win your clan get bonus like a new leader card stuff like that. It nice that there is so many clans and sooo many ways to win makes it fun. I know that magic as quite a few ways to win (in causal) but in reality milling or battle of wits and other ways are really not that good (in tournaments though brain freeze has won some games but that is more of a storm problem) But in LotFR's all 4 or 5 ways are solid.

Multiple plans to victory sounds fun. Magic usually only has 1 way to win by attacking. I know poison and infect are around but I don't know if they have won any tournaments.
I know Legend of the Five Rings (Lofr) lets players choose the events of certain story lines. I might try to make something like Forge for Lofr but I haven't decided anything yet. I need to get two precons and figure out the gameplay from them.

Poison has certainly won tournaments. See the article at wizards about the "sliver kids".

Also, "just attacking" is certainly not the only way to win Magic. There have been many creature-less combo decks that have won tournaments as well. Many of the most brutal decks in history were these types of decks.

To add to that, didn't we have a deck contest a while back where creatures weren't supposed to be the main focus of the deck?friarsol wrote:Also, "just attacking" is certainly not the only way to win Magic. yeah i guess the most famous way to win with poison was the Flash and Protean Hulk. Use flash to put it into pay dont pay the cost for hulk. Hulk dies but you get the tigger to do Haste sliver and 4 poison slivers and swing lol.
