OK to make a Let's Play?

Postby arashmickey » 19 Dec 2011, 19:53

Hey folks,

I just made a mini video-introduction for Forge, and I'm thinking about a making a let's play sometime in the future. If you don't know what a Let's Play is, it's basically a recording of a playthrough of computer game with added commentary from the player. Usually this gets uploaded to youtube, and it's a pretty popular format.

You guys have made such a great program that is so much fun, I wanted to make a little video to share it. I haven't uploaded it yet, although I can make it an unlisted video just to show you guys. I just wanted to ask you guys whether it's or not it's a good idea. If for whatever reason you don't want none of this, I respect that and I've no problem. This is your party and I'm just here to have a good time!

Oh yeah, here's a good reason! My little video is like damning with faint praise, because I'm not good at this whereas Forge is awesome!

Alright, let me know what you think, and thanks for making this great, fun game!

I'd be interested in seeing an unlisted video before deciding further. If the other devs are cool with the idea, you may want to wait till the upcoming UI overhaul gets released to Beta, since it looks much nicer than our previous UI.

friarsol; I think you are making this bigger than it is when you say that you need to see a sample to decide. It's no BBC documentary he is talking about.

But I agree all publicy might nopt be good publicity.

I'm not trying to make anything bigger than it is. I just hadn't heard of Let's Play, so was trying to figure out what it was about before making any decisions regarding it.

No problem. I should mention my stuff is amateur and I don't get many views  but it's fun to do (btw my channel name is my username). One thing I didn't count on is Fraps - my recording software - has made videos with different sizes for every screen, menu and prompt. It turns out virtual dub - video editing - can't put those together into one video. I'll have to figure out a way to do this properly, and either way I'll certainly run it by you guys so you can decide what to do with the result. It's easy to make an LP once you figure out the recording/processing.

The other thing that was bothering me is that I know that youtube gets monitored more closely than the web at large, vids getting flagged and taken down with copyright claims, and what with all the IP laws being proposed... a while back I read that thread about the DCMA thing and this sort of thing just gives me pause I guess. I don't know if I'd be getting you in trouble, which I don't want, so I figure I just mention that too in case you hadn't thought of it.

Thanks for the response. If I get it working I'll post an unlisted video just so you can get an idea.
