Strange Deck editor issue
by Fracturedorb » 12 Sep 2012, 18:02
So my roomate has a copy of MTG-Forge on his computer and we have different deck editors. Mine is missing a search feature, and I have no Idea how to get it back.
The tabs I have available are:
Card Catalog
Current Deck
Stats
Draw Order
Card Detail
Prefrences
Card Picture
I've re-installed the newest version over my old one and short of totally deleting everything, how do I get the search box back?

Fixed my own problem. In the "mtg-forge\res\layouts" directory there are 2 editor xml files. Preferred and default, just copy the default over the preferred and it resets the layout. Still not sure how they vanished.

Deleting the preferred file will force forge to use the default one instead. Something is causing the preferred file to become corrupted.

I would like an option where you can say if the game should save these 'preffered' layouts, since sometimes you just do something on accident, ...

Can't you already save the layouts out and reload them in?Nordos wrote:I would like an option where you can say if the game should save these 'preffered' layouts, since sometimes you just do something on accident, ...

Saving/loading of layouts was only added to the battlefield layouts I suspect.

Seriously? There's supposed to be a search function in the Deck Editor?
I continue to have problems with the deck editor (see my other postings) and as I've said before, I don't know what is missing. I've never seen a search function. I do not have a preferred deck editor layout file in my layouts folder. (I make sure I always use the default because of all the problems I've been having.)
Could someone please list all the tabs that should be showing in the deck editor for me?
How do I get a search tab? Maybe someone can upload a editor_default.xml file for me to try.

You should look for a tab named "Filters".

Oh good. I have a Filters tab. I thought there might be a specific tab named Search that I'd be missing.
Sometimes I'm missing almost half of those check boxes though. It seems alright right now, but I'll get you a screenshot when it's broken.

It would be nice if forge came with an extensive instructional manual.

If the Filters tab/panel is too narrow then the filter checkboxes will disappear as they are drawn past the right side of the panel. In this case you should widen the panel or move it to a panel cluster that is wide enough to display all of the objects.

I think it might be doable if we, the fans, contribute to a Wiki to get this great program documented. What if you get it started, create an online spot for it, and see what happens. I know it works for a lot of open source programs out there. I'd be one person quite interested in writing up many areas for this Wiki.Chris H. wrote:It would be nice if forge came with an extensive instructional manual.Unfortunately, this would take a lot of time and effort and we do not want to pull the devs away from their development work.

Forge has a wiki located at The Forge wiki at SlighlyMagic.
Most of this wiki is dev related. There is some basic instructional material that is aimed at the user base. Looks like someone added a page titled Forge User Guide.
People with a SlighlyMagic account should be able to sign in to this wiki and edit this user guide to their hearts content. We will se how this develops.

At some stage I do plan on making a basic Forge User Manual that would cover basic navigation, and introduce the different game modes. I'd also add a section for customizing Forge (including adding custom cards, although for the actual scripting I'll just point to the wiki). This could then be made available for download or included in the release package if it's not too big (if I do it though I'll make it look GOOD so probably a few MB).
It's just one of those projects that I'd need to do big sections at a time, so lately jumping into java has just been far easier.

In the early days Rares had a pdf manual with some pics to go along with the instructions. It quickly went out of date.
It might be best to add on to the wiki as it then can become a group project rather than a one man show.

Wait, you can add custom cards? Every day you learn something new about Forge...
