Cannot install forge
by Amdoravel » 11 Apr 2013, 01:34
I recently had to uninstall forge because i was fooling around with my layouts and accidentally changed my game layout to the deck editor layout causing a crash every time i entered a game... Unfort after unzipping the Forge Beta: 03-27-2013 ver 1.3.11 file it turns into a .out file which i have no way of running on my windows machine... apparently this is a linux based file... how can i get forge working on my machine again... my Internets iffy 90% of the time so i need to fix it fast as forge is the only thing i have to do during the down times LOL

CHANGES.txt wrote:
The archive format used for the Forge distribution is ".tar.bz2". There are utilities for Windows, Mac OS and the various *nix's that can be used to extract/decompress these ".tar.bz2" archives. We recommend that you extract/decompress the Forge archive into a new and unused folder.
Some people use the Windows application 7zip. This utility can be found at http://www.7-zip.org/download.html.

Download and install winRAR. It uses a single step to extract Forge. I've been using it for many months. After 45 days, you'll get nagged about paying for it, but you can ignore the nag screen.

You might want to delete that file, then redownload the archive. That is not supposed to happen.

As I remember when I had problems extracting those tarballs two years ago, use of latest winRar helped. Also renamed tar.bz2 to plain tar - but don't remember if it worked.timmermac wrote:You might want to delete that file, then redownload the archive. That is not supposed to happen.
I sincerelly hope that the next release will be shipped in zip archives for windows users.

I'm using version 4.2 (64-bit). There's no need to rename the file. Just double-click it, hit the extract button, and it extracts just fine.
