Forge is the official new name

I'm going to post the message below on Friday on my blog.

The name "MTG Forge" appears to attract Wizard's lawyers like flies to Aunt's Mays apple pie. Having the initials "mtg" seems to be the reason for the cease and desist letter about my original Sourceforge.net site. The name "Forge" sounds a little weird and empty to me but it is good enough. (And everybody by now should know that I am a firm believer in “good enough”.) The official name of this project is "Forge" and my official nickname is "mtgrares".

I tried calling myself forge but it is a little bit confusing having the same name for both a person and a project.
I don't really care what we call this project, feel free to make other suggestions. Forge seems abstract to me but anything that doesn't attract lawyers sounds good to me.

The problem with having "Magic" in the name is the same as "mtg".

Forge doesn't have any real meaning but neither does Wagic or Incantus. (Although Wagic is a little bit funny like Mario and Wario.)

Forge sounds OK.
Wagic reminds me of "(Z–>)90º – (E–N²W)90ºt = 1" (Niv-Mizzet is #1) in spelling Magic when you flip all the captital letters (namely W) :P.
Then again, I do not see how Wizards could pursue someone using "magic" in a title.

Forge would save much of the hassle if people who in a way have forgotten its name, have decided to come back looking for it. At least Forge sticks.

Long live the Forge

Sticking-wise, possibly even "Nonsteel Forge": completely uncopyrighted, and recognizable to most people who play mtg :).

I have very little knowledge of trademarks and copyrights, but it seems nobody but WotC is allowed to use the term "The Dark" in the context of a card game... go figure...

I know it's late to the party... but how about "Mystic Forge"? Keeps the flavor and the basic tenants you're looking for I guess. :)

If it's too late, that's cool too.

It's all about context.

You can call something "Magic the Mop" as long as it's actually a mop product.

But if the product is a card game, or a computer simulation of one, then that's too close to the mark. If they don't attempt to protect the branding, they can't claim the relationship with the "Magic" identity.
Especially since in common conversation, we don't say "Hey wanna play a game of Magic: The Gathering?" we say, "Hey let's play some Magic" and we all know what the other person means by that. Well, except some of my daughter's friends... but ask if they want to play Pokemon and they know exactly what to do... little buggers.
