I recently attempted to download and start 1.5.55, only to receive the following message:

The registry refers to a nonexistent Java Runtime Environment installation or the runtime is corrupted.

The system cannot find the path specified.

I attempted to reinstall java and did so successfully, but the message still appears. What should I do?

Never had this problem myself, but i remember having seen something like that on another board.

Try the solutions there , looks like the path aren't correctly in the Java entries of your registry :
