Trouble hosting and connecting to 1:1 games

Hi there all,
New forge user here. I'm on the Mac Version linked in the forums. All seems to work well except when a friend and I try to connect for a game. Same issue with either of us hosting, when we try to connect using the generated IP address, we get a 'connecting to server' pop up, then nothing.
Any tips?
