installing Forge/Forge Mobile backport in Ubuntu

Postby Jessica » 20 Feb 2019, 18:07

Hi,

This is a question for the Linux gurus out there :D

I'm taking my first steps in the Linux open source world and I'm really liking it!
Installed Ubuntu on a new laptop and learning how to use Ubuntu.

I want to install Forge and Forge Mobile backport on Ubuntu.

Here some questions about the installation:

1) Forge:

I see on Ubuntu there is OpenJDK installed. To my knowledge this is an open source implementation of Oracle's Java
(https://openjdk.java.net/)

Can I run Forge on this Java version or do I need to install Oracle's Java?

2) Forge Mobile backport:

Same question as for Forge.

Additional question: somewhere on the forum I have read there is additional software needed to run the backport.
Because I'm very new to Linux, I don't know how to download and install this additional software.
Can somebody give me a screenshot, link or explanation where to download and install that software (I'm using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS)?

Thanks in advance!
Jessica

Hi Jessica-

Not a guru by any means but I may be able to help.

To answer your questions:

1) Correct, you can use either OpenJDK or Oracle java to run Forge. You may or may not have Java installed on your machine.

To check, open the Terminal and run:
java -version.

If you need to install Java, I would recommend OpenJDK just because there are less hoops you need to jump through to get it installed.

To install OpenJDK, open the Terminal and run:
sudo apt install default-jre

2) In addition to Java, the mobile backport requires JavaFX 8 or newer to run.

To install JavaFX, open the Terminal and run:
sudo apt install openjfx

Being that you are new to Linux (and specifically Ubuntu), I would definitely recommend researching apt and learning how it works. Here is a nice guide to get you started - https://itsfoss.com/apt-command-guide/

Good Luck!
