Your memorable drafts

Postby Hellfish » 02 Aug 2010, 12:36

We all know some crazy stuff can happen in drafts what with cards from throughout MtG's history being available, but what are some of your more memorable drafts?

For instance, I recently drafted four-of Isochron Scepter ( :o ), a bunch of Lightning Bolts,Firebolt and Colossal Might PLUS Kird Ape s + Taiga. Needless to say that draft was the breeziest breeze to ever breeze. :P 5 out of 10 games I'd just Lightning Bolt out my Isochrons, 4 out of 10 I'd Colossal Might any creature I happened to draw (using an isochron of course) and then there was that one game where the AI repeatedly Naturalized and Disenchanted my Scepters, so I shrugged and let my monkey lackeys go to town. Least tactful deck ever, SMASH FACE for the glory!

I've had some insane drafts, searching my blog I found that "once I drafted two Serra Angels, two Moxes, and two Glorious Anthems. It was a thing of beauty." I called it "Forge - the crazy draft version" because all of the cards had the same rarity. (Common.txt, uncommon.txt, and rare.txt had the same card names.)

I had a draft where Forge must have feeling Tempest-y, as I managed to put together a fairly decent sliver deck by the time it was all done.

Nothing like drafting a Time Walk...

Since drafts tend to be more creature-oriented, it's nice when you get a few bombs in one or two colours. Baneslayer Angel, Visara the Dreadful, Kokusho, the Evening Star, Iona, Shield of Emeria. Yeah, those are nice game ending drops. Especially when you can put Swords to Plowshares or Diabolic Edict on a stick. ( Isochron Scepter. )

Is it just me or is it easier to draft any Red/Green than any alternative? Even when I thought I'd drafted the worst possible crap (Lots of off-color, very little in the way of synergies) I still manage to beat all 7 opponents in a row usually. The only other draft I've managed that with was a stall/evasion mostly blue deck.
Sidenote: I love Coiled Tinviper in drafts. 8)

I don't know what the actual statistics are, but we probably have a higher percentage of red and green cards. The other color cards we do have are likely lacking in power level (on average) compared to red/green, because the more powerful cards in those colors are (on average) more difficult to implement. The most powerful cards in red/green tend to be easier to implement - damage and pump effects are probably the two most widely represented keywords.

I just had a Honden draft the other day. It was way too much fun! It was RWb with double honden in red. I fought against it, but after taking two at the end of the first draft round, I let it happen and took a second red and the black one, which I was splashing anyway for Dauthi Marauders and removal.

I couldn't believe how easily it rolled through the gauntlet, and how devastating any two of them were when in play.

Sure made a nice change from the creatures + removal + mana curve = virtual guaranteed wins.

I'm glad that the draft was fun and different. Forge draft's are very "artificial" but I'm glad that they are still fun.

Forge was started because I loved drafting in Shandalar so much, even though it features probably the worst drafting in all of Magic.

The crazy decks you can get in Forge are pretty insane since the AI seems to "stick to its colors". Here is the craziest deck I've drafted.

Code: Select all

    4 Island
    3 Plains
    3 Swamp
    1 Underground Sea
    1 Tundra
    1 Dimir Aqueduct
    1 Azorius Chancery
    1 Mox Sapphire
    1 Mox Pearl
    1 Mox Jet
    2 Ancestral Recall
    1 Vendilion Clique
    1 Trinket Mage
    1 Mystical Tutor
    3 Mulldrifter
    1 Impulse
    1 Repulse
    1 Cloud Djinn
    1 Divination
    1 Shadowmage Infiltrator
    1 Enlightened Tutor
    1 Swords to Plowshares
    1 Path to Exile
    1 Day of Judgment
    1 Demonic Tutor
    1 Phyrexian Rager
    1 Diabolic Edict
    1 Smother
    1 Hypnotic Specter
1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind
    [sideboard]
    1 Dark Ritual
    1 Disenchant
    1 Deft Duelist

Keep in mind that you get to define your own card pools.

Hmmm, I guess that wasn't clear. The deck I drafted above was from the draft cube I posted in a separate thread not the "all-cards-in-forge" drafting. It's still the stupid AI's fault for passing Moxen and Ancestral Recall and all the other broken cards. Frankly I really don't like drafting with all of the cards available because there are so many cards that are good in a specific limited environment, but marginal (or plain terrible) in others.

Example: Terror is terrible in Mirrodin block, but it's pretty awesome in most draft environments because there aren't as many artifact creatures.

Example: Nissa's Chosen is terrible in most environments, but it's pretty awesome in Zendikar draft because it's a 2 drop with 3 toughness.

I'll just stop here, but I could come up with more examples if you were really interested. Crafting a good limited environment is hard. Believe me... I am working to improve my Forge draft cube right now :)

Juzam,

I think you did an outstanding job on the cube, it makes drafting in forge actually fun. The draft you ended up with in that example is pretty rare (with the Moxen and Recalls), I personally haven't seen that yet when I played your cube.

I was just thinking, it might be fun to have multiple sets of draft rarity files, and then allowing the player to select different cubes to draft from. But now that we're moving into a direction where the draft rarity is defined in cards.txt, this will be much harder.
