Did I miss something?

Good day.
Not new to forum, just new to post question.
I know how to play, but the AI kept punching my face brutally... It kept summoning creatures, but I was struggling either no mana to cast, or no monster to summon...
Fine, I switch the decks, thinking the deck focus on Plain color would be easier, but get slaughtered hilariously... Again, either no mana to cast, or no monster to summon...
Played around 7 matches, just basic Constructed decks.
Lost each one =D>
Same struggling =D>
Am I bad luck? Is there a way to tune the AI?
Please advise...
I sincerely wish to know...

The AI is pretty good. I think the AI is better than that of Magic Duels which I used to play. So if you are an average player, the AI is going to beat you half the time. If you are a great player, you will beat the AI most of the time.

You might need to play more and gain more skill to achieve the win/loss ratio you desire.

But your sample size might just be too small. You might have had a run of bad luck and just be on a losing streak. If you play more, you might find that you are winning a lot more games than you did at first.

One thing I sometimes do if I am losing a lot with a certain deck I am playing against a certain other deck the AI is playing is switch decks. I play the AI's and the AI plays mine. If I suddenly find that I am always winning and the AI is always losing, then one of the decks stinks, one of the decks is awesome, or it is a problematic matchup where one of the decks is just weak against the particular strengths of the other. For example, a deck that draws lots and lots of cards really fast as its theme would be weak against a deck that mills the opponent and makes them lose by running out of cards in their library.

One thing you could do if the difficulty level is always too hard, is build really great decks for you to play, and build purposely weakened decks for the AI to play. You could fine tune and strengthen and weaken decks until you achieved the desired balance.

Hi,

also would be interesting to know which decks you were playing!
Either something was off with those decks or this sounds like incredible bad luck..

Mana to spell ratio should be around 45% +/-2%, maybe. With that ratio you're guaranteed to draw at least 2 land in your first hand or after 1 mulligan. Usually. And it should provide you with mana as you move on. If those decks had too many heavy hitters e.g. creature spells too crowded around the higher CMCs, slow mana won't let you mount a defence in time.

The default Ai will kill you, happily, every time you let it happen. You could test one of the other Ais but I'm not sure that premise will change :D

There are a few tricks that will allow you some breathing room, where the Ai suddenly stops attacking, even if it has the advantage:

- having a creature with regeneration on your side (Ai won't attack, even if it's e.g. 5 vs your 1 regen creature)

- same with having a creature with deathtouch

- sometimes the Ai waits with the attack, even if it's got twice the attackers. At some point it calculates/waits for a deciding alpha strike, which would have a very high chance of winning the game.
It won't attack tactically to try to punch holes in your defence one by one, for example.

- With 6 lifepoints or less, Ai won't attack anymore, even with bigger creatures.
Maybe with a flying creature, only sometimes though. Less so with unblockable ones. 6 lifepoints or less means defence mode.

To check how a game progresses including the Ais side of things, enable developer mode and in game look for "View all cards" checkbox in the "dev" tab. Ais hand and deck become visible that way :)

But yea, keep playing against it, you'll find out its other quirks and get a sense for its behaviour.

I switch with AI between these two decks...
I wonder if it would be easier to play flying creature deck instead :? Hmmm...
Or maybe I use Cautious AI instead... :? Hmmm...

Thanks for telling me which decks you used.
So I started a match, default Ai, I played the red green warrior one, not knowing any of those cards (I'm very oldschool) nor did I check any of the decks beforehand.

Got 3 lands in my starting hand, that land fetching sorcery twice, so mana wasn't a problem, only one creature though, that 3/3 which generates an elf token.

After the second Plains my opponent played and tapped both for his first knight, which boosts others with +1/+1 counters on them, I thought:"Maaaaaybe white weenie".

Pretty soon there were a bunch of those knights out there on the other side, one of them getting another +1/+1 counter every turn. I wasn't just watching those developments, though :mrgreen:

I fetched 3(?) lands successfully and could summon one or two biggies myself, the deciding factor was Boldwyr Intimidator, with him and another attacker, later with that 8/8 trampler, equipped to 10/9 alone, I could punch holes in the opponents defence (thanks to some "sudden" cowardice in their ranks), turn by turn, taking out the biggest threads first.

Ready to finish my first game with those decks (Ai ended up having -24 lifepoints):

Against that white deck, you need to get mana out quickly with that red green deck. There may be other strategies, but I'd have to check the deck contents to be sure.

If you're mana screwed, as with most decks, this will get tougher or impossible to win.
(White) weenie decks usually have one or more triggers to get things rolling, in this case it seemed to be counter distribution, lifelink and get effects with extra life, like popping out 4/4 flyers each turn etc.

Just before testing those two decks, I played against the last draft Ai (#7) from my current pool (original Mirrodin, MRD/MRD/DST draft).

I needed 3 attempts* to find a strategy against that deck, which seemed impossible to win against, because it had control AND lots of creatures. In the end the winning strategy was to throw almost all creatures from my sideboard in the deck, to slow down the attacks and have enough targets for his anti creature spells (of which he had plenty for a draft deck in these colors)

That Ai drafted very good or was simply very lucky with the draft, white/blue, just 1 card drafted wasn't in those colors... :shock: deck list attached.

* My deck wasn't the best either :mrgreen:

Keep at it, observe the spell to land ratio, mulligan two/three times if you have to and good luck for future games :D
