Forge Adventure mode like Shandalar

Postby Grimm » 14 Jul 2021, 02:24

Hello Everyone,

Ever since I played the good old Shandalar game from 1997, I search for a similar game, but never found one.

Then I found this amazing project and thought it should be possible to add an adventure mode like Shandalar.
At the end I downloaded the sources and startet to develop something.

While a lot of the work for a game like Shandalar is already done (the actual magic game and all the cards),
I still need to develop quite a lot.

Here a small video about what I did last week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl6Ncs7HTvU

I want to use this topic to list/update the current progress and to get some feedback.
The scope of the project will basically to replicate something like Shandalar, but i wanted to update some of the features.
Namely:
  • Generated and more dungeons.
  • Bioms rather then random changing underground.
  • Maybe other reward/punish system then ante.
  • Less time pressure.
Also all content will be based on configuration files, so you could add new plains, for example add Mirrodin where everyone plays commander.

Right now there is still a LOT to do.
  • World
    1. ☑ Biom generation
    2. ☑ Auto tiles for the ground
    3. ☑ Sprites like trees and rocks depending on the biom
    4. ☑ Spawn enemies
    5. ☑ Add towns
    6. ☑ Add dungeons
    7. ☑ Add castles(boss dungeons)
  • Gameplay
    1. ☑ Reward system
    2. ☑ Equipment
    3. ☑ State system (gold, max life, current life, etc)
  • Town/Dungeons features
    1. ☑ Collision
    2. ☑ Shops
    3. ☑ Nested dungeons
    4. ☑ Enemies
    5. ☑ Treasure
  • Magic
    1. ☑ Fully integrate the Forge player (maybe build some parts new)
    2. ☑ Integrate deck builder

I will update the progress, but until I have something to play it will take a while.

Sprites for the world map are implemented.

I deleted the poll and I will keep using sprites.
This should not be a problem anymore with the new asset set.

A really, really interesting and exciting project indeed! I recall there was an attempt at making a similar Shandalar-like world-based game for Forge back in its early years (circa 2009-2010 - ish, if I remember right), but sadly, the project wasn't completed back then and all traces of it must have been lost. I wish you the best of luck in this effort and I hope you'll manage to complete it, this is something Forge has been missing since forever, hehe :) Keep up the great work!

That's really awesome dude! It's exactly what I've been looking for quite some time. The only other game similar to Shandalar was the Hex Shards of Fate campaign (game got canceled unfortunately). Hoping you achieve this dream for everyone!

Thanks everyone,
the only 2 reasons why I am doing this is.
a. there is not a single new game like this (throne breaker is close but not enough customization)
b. this community did make an enormes job by creating the magic engine and supporting that many cards.

Here a small update on the UI and character creation.

Hey Grimm, again just want to say I appreciate what you're trying to do and thought I'd throw a few ideas out there:

1. A card upgrade system similar to how Hex's card equipement or Legends of Runettera's Labs mode. Along your jorney you are presented with events that offer upgrades to specific cards in your collection. These can range from just stat bonuses to upgrading or altering the card's effects.
2. A sandbox mode after you defeat all the main bosses. It's really sad once a run ends and you had a killer collection/deck and just want to play more.

I never played this game, but modifying cards will not be easy.
This probably would require major changes in the forge system, but i was looking into ways to make the game more asyncron.
(start with a 1/1 token or stuff like this)
But for now I will just alter the starting life total, this will take a while until I have something playable anyway.

For now an update on the Towns to buy new cards:
https://youtu.be/shURxEzPzlI

The towns and dungeons are created in Tiled
https://www.mapeditor.org/
So it should be easy to add new content, like sliver hives and vampire castles.

Wow, it's looking great :)
These we're just suggestions, obviously the priority is recreating the shandalar experience in forge.
I'm perfectly happy with just an updated shandalar. I mean with all the cards in forge this mode is going to keep us ocupied for quite a while.

Just an update on the reward screen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvhcZO-8-lE

I thought, i will just rotate the card over the y axis and done. Then I needed 2 days to
set the right Quaternion in the transformation matrix.
Set the Projection matrix to have a new perspective and calculating the right frustum...
I guess it is not meant to have 3d operations on a 2d OpenGl setup.

And you will still see an error if the card is not in the center since I swap the texture after 50% of the flip and if the card is to the right you would see the new card sooner.

Hello everyone,

For those who wanted to help, I compiled a somewhat playable state of the project.

This is nothing to just play and enjoy.
There is only 1 type of town, only some enemy and there is only 1 type of dungeon (in the swamp).

But you can see in what direction my idea is going.

I will add documentation, how to add enemies, dungeons shops etc. so that you can add content for this project.

I am also open for new features, right now the missing planned features are

- Equipment/Items, that you or your enemy has equipped and will alter the state of the magic game.
- something in the towns besides shops and the Inn, maybe arenas or quests.
- some kind of progression, maybe dungeons that will increase the difficulty and unlocks other dungeons or "the boss".

Right now I will share the binary on my google drive, until it gets merged into the main project.

There is a extra .exe in the folder for windows users, but it can be started with
forge-adventure-1.6.43-SNAPSHOT-jar-with-dependencies.jar
for other users.

Nice job, Grimm!
You think adding different formats (like commander, archenemy, etc.) is possible in the game mode? Or is it too much of a hussle?
Would be nice if for example you want to enter a dungeon and you get a pop-up for a format change within the dungeon, after which it allows you to edit your deck before you venture in the dungeon.

hmm interesting,
I was planing to configure the format for the hole adventure.

Selecting the format on a new game would not be so easy because then every enemy would need a deck for each format.
But changing the format only for a dungeon could work, you still have to create new enemies for this dungeon, but this should be possible.

I did start the documentation but this will take a while until I have everything.
