Creating new keywords—how to make templates WotC-standard?

Postby jeffreestar » 12 Sep 2025, 03:21

Hi everyone,
While developing a custom set, I came up with a new mechanic called “Resonate”:
Resonate—Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, this creature gets +1/+0 until the end of the turn.
The idea is to make creatures “resonate” their power when you cast a spell. However, I’m not sure if this wording is really close to Wizards of the Coast standards, especially in terms of:
Reminder text: Do I need to add “you control”?
Punctuation: should I use semicolons, commas, or line breaks?
How to write action keywords compared to ability keywords.
Also, are there any official guidelines on naming keywords to avoid duplication/confusion with old keywords?
What documents do people usually rely on for template mechanics? Any tips to help with wording to be “neat—correct—standard” from the start?
We look forward to receiving comments and examples from those who have experience writing reminder text or have successfully created fan-made keywords.
Thanks in advance!
