I'd like to contribute in the artistic department
by choppic » 17 Dec 2010, 13:02
Hi all, my name is Agus, I'm an Indonesian and this is my first post in this forum.
I just found Forge, and I love it. Forge has great programmers working really hard, putting energy into this game.
In my humble opinion this game has some rooms for improvement in the interface (GUI) department. I'm an artist myself and I'd like to contribute for this project if possible. So if you guys need some images, avatar, or any other art piece for this game, I may be able to help.
I have some images in my website at http://www.choppic.com if any of you want to see my style.

Hello Chopic,
an adventure mode (similar to the Shandalar game) is in the making. After the alpha is released I'm sure we could need some help adding and improving artwork. It's still a one man project though, the known details can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=2907.

Welcome to the Forge, choppic.
The interface is relatively difficult for most of the developers to work on. The original screens were built using a long-defunct Java environment with visual layout design tools like Visual Basic. (drag-and-drop text boxes and buttons, etc...) Now that Eclipse is the primary Java IDE of choice, the GUI has remained relatively static. There's one developer who has advanced the GUI for the game window, with the dynamic card resizing and stuff, but not the other game screens.
We are currently using a number of images borrowed from another project. These are used for the quest mode screens.
We also have a couple images for the mana pool which are functional, though not 100% original.
Same with the Pet tokens used in the quest mode - they're all photographs from Googgle image search, not artwork. Also, I didn't put in the effort to indicate the change in size from 'baby' pet to 'adult' pet, not critical... just something that is easy for artistic-types with time on their hands....

I'll check the adventure mode. But let me know if I can help with anything specific.
Rob, so there is not even a slight possibility to upgrade the GUI without recoding the whole thing?

Yeah, there's very little that can be done to it without understanding the code.

Thanks for the compliments guys..
Too bad we couldn't do something about the UI
Just let me know if anyone need some artistic touch for the adventure mode.

Hey choppic, could you make icon sets while we wait on the adventure mode to be ready for an artistic uplift? There's definitely parts of the UI we can pretty up.
Maybe icons for: Attacking, Blocking, Library, Graveyard, Hand, Life, Poison Counters. I think we could implement those, and maybe we can find someone who could recreate the UI for a reinvigorated feel.

A symbol for summoning sickness would also be nice.

I made some various sorts of icons intended for use in my Kid Magic MSE template. Haste was rather difficult because summoning sickness is kinda hard to represent, it's rather abstract....

Guys,
Can a non-programmer like me download the latest source code for Forge?
Maybe this has been asked like hundred of times already, and I did poke around the forum but I can't find the link to the source code.
Thanks

Thank you.
Sloth put together a temporary attack icon to overlay the card graphic and it is currently displayed in the new GUI battlefield. The attack icon measures 25 x 25 pixels. I have included several pics/archives to the end of this message. I hope that they will be useful.

I did them all in circle shape to have the uniformity feel
