6 newbie questions about Forge
by TastetheJace » 12 Oct 2012, 06:10
Hey guys,
I've been using forge for a few months now. First things first, it's a fantastic program. I give major kudos to all of those who put in the hard work in constructing it. As a person who doesn't have the time to go to many FNM and drafts, nor the income (recent college graduate) to continually "keep up" with Magic, Forge has been a great stand in. I love being able to play with cards both newly released and of yesteryear that I might never be able to otherwise. I used to do solely drafts but recently I got into quest mode. Anywho, I have a few easy questions.
1) When in quest mode, what is the biggest way to earn credits? I see that a lot of things cost thousands of them. Winning a match right now (vs hard decks) gives less than a hundred or so. Is it mainly by selling cards back from boosters? I haven't done a challenge yet; maybe that has a bigger payout. Also, I've noticed that the percentage selling value for my cards is changing. Is this because of winning games or just merely competing in a set number of them? Maybe I ought to start spending on the "Estates" in the bazaar.
2) When an attacking creature is blocked by multiple blockers and the screen comes up to assign blocking order, is there an indication to which creature is being blocked? If memory serves best I don't think the log shows who is blocking whom while that screen is up, so when I swing with multiple fatties I have to best guess which creature is being blocked. I might be wrong though. I'll check soon.
3) Of the 55 boosters I've opened after matches, I've gotten one mythic (Bonfire of the Damned). I think in actual Magic boosters the chance of a mythic is one in eight. Is this intentional or have I had horrible luck? Also, I occasional win an extra rare. Without the "Lucky Coin", what is the actual percentage of winning the extra? Does the extra have a chance to be a mythic?
4) Sometimes the spell shop has less cards to buy and sometimes it has more. Is this random or is it because I have or have not bought cards since a match ago?
5) I had Forge download all the card images of all the sets, but once in a blue moon there will be no card image for a particular card. If I click to download again will it do all the card images again or just the ones that aren't showing up?
6) When a bug is reported and one of the developers say it's now fixed, does that mean the bug will be fixed in time for the next version or can you download the current version from the provided link without said bug?
Thanks a lot guys!

1.In an unrestricted quest, choosing alpha/beta boosters and selling the abundance of highpower cards.
2.Sol has written up a nice overview of the blocker interface.Also Doublestrike revamped the entire thing for the next version.
3.Should be random.Not sure about the coin percentage, but I think it's only regular rares.
4.Don't know, sorry.
5.Forge checks which cards you don't have pics for.
6.It will be available in the next beta OR the next snapshot.I don't remember the link for the snapshots though,sorry.

So now you're
Screaming for the blood of the cookie monster
Evil puppet demon of obesity
Time to change the tune of his fearful ballad
C is for "Lettuce," that's good enough for me

The most up-to date Snapshot is ATM http://cardforge.org/releases/snapshots ... -5.tar.bz2

For most people it is best for them to wait for the next beta release. Snapshot builds can be somewhat unstable and are most useful for the people that are actively involved in testing.

To add onto Hellfish's answers:
1. Winning quickly, winning challenges, playing for ante. Sell all your leftover crud.
2. The next release should show the attacker that's ordering for when the popup first shows up in the CardDetailPanel.
3. Sounds unlucky. I see Mythic's open up seemingly way too often. The Lucky Coin gives +15% chance. I think it might be like 25% -> 40%. But I haven't looked at that code in a while.
4. The quest card shop works as an inverted Bell Curve. When you first start your quest more cards are available, because you are more likely to need cards to fill out your deck. As you play and gain "levels" the amount that is available is reduced until you reach a certain threshold, and then it climbs back up to availability that is the maximum. This was mostly a quest balance change.
5. I noticed this recently, it seems like cards that you own in RTR that are also reprints, don't show up their LQ Picture, if you also have LQ Set Pictures from the other sets. I'm not sure why that is.

Actually it is a 50%/65% chance, respectively:friarsol wrote:To add onto Hellfish's answers:

- private boolean getLuckyCoinResult() {
final boolean hasCoin = qData.getAssets().getItemLevel(QuestItemType.LUCKY_COIN) >= 1;
return MyRandom.getRandom().nextFloat() <= (hasCoin ? 0.65f : 0.5f);
}
So the lucky coin gives you a better than even chance (almost 2/3 chance) at a random rare after every won match. Definitely a sound investment in quest mode!

My two cents - if you "save up" a bit for a booster or precon, there's usually something in there that makes it worth the wait...

Thanks you guys for all the responses and answers! In case anyone's wondering I once pulled a mythic from the extra rare won so it is possible.
