What Java editor do you use?

Postby mtgrares » 12 Mar 2009, 20:03

In short, what editor and compiler do you use to compile MTG Forge?

What Java editor do you use? I'm almost thinking about going back to Notepad because it is simple and my computer will actually run it. I like JBuilder but my computer doesn't run the new version very well, it grinds the hard drive. Maybe I should buy more memory, I only have 256 MB.

And I guess MTG Forge compiles with Java 1.5 or 1.6 if you don't check for errors, no -XLint (or whatever that switch is called). I tried to compile it under JBuilder but it generated like 1,200 errors and warnings since it turns on all the warning and errors messages.

I'm thinking about trying to improve the attacking and blocking code using something sophisticated like min-max but only if I can find an editor that works on my old computer. (I'm not sure how much an improvement it would be but hopefully the computer would chump block correctly.)

I'm using Eclipse, Java 1.5 I think? It is definitely a resource hog though, my laptop (which is almost 3 years old now, it has a mere 1 GB of RAM) has a hard time running it, especially if I run more stuff in the background.

I wouldn't use notepad, give EditPlus a shot (I use this for my php projects), it's got pretty colors AND is lightweight :)
I still prefer Eclipse because of its refactoring functionality and auto-complete!

EditPlus costs money though doesn't it? What about Notepad++ or emacs?

Notepad++ for some fast coding without all the extra bells and whistles otherwise Eclipse as it's the best free and extensible java IDE (can be a hog on those low memory systems). If you like those with one million shortcuts and console based you'll most likely fall in love with vim or emacs.

vim and emacs scare me, lol. I guess I'm a Windows person through and through. Regular notepad is as primitive as I get.

I recently discovered that there is a version of Eclipse for my Macintosh computer.

I'm looking at the site:

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

I have a question and I was wondering if anyone could provide some advice. There are several different packages and two of them look like they might fit the bill.

Eclipse IDE for Java Developers (84 MB)

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/technology/epp/downloads/release/ganymede/SR2/eclipse-java-ganymede-SR2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz

The essential tools for any Java developer, including a Java IDE, a CVS client, XML Editor and Mylyn.

Eclipse Classic 3.4.2 (150 MB)

http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/download.php?file=/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.4.2-200902111700/eclipse-SDK-3.4.2-macosx-carbon.tar.gz

The classic Eclipse download: the Eclipse Platform, Java Development Tools, and Plug-in Development Environment, including source and both user and programmer documentation.

Just get the second one (I think that's the one I'm using). I'm not sure about the exact differences, but the second one probably just has more functionality/handy tools.

The first one is all you need unless you want to write plugins for eclipse.

Ahhh, Thank you very much. It is good to see that I can get by with the smaller of the two packages.
